Indra's Net, by Rajiv Malhotra

It is fashionable among intellectuals to assert that dharma traditions lacked any semblance of unity before the British period, and that the contours of contemporary Hinduism were bequeathed to us by our colonial masters. Such arguments routinely target Swami Vivekananda, a key interlocutor who shattered many deeply rooted prejudices against Indian civilization. They accuse him of having camouflaged various alleged 'contradictions' within traditional Hinduism, and charge him with having appropriated the principles of Western religion to 'manufacture' a unified world view and a set of practices known today as Hinduism. Rajiv Malhotra offers a systematic rejoinder to such views and articulates the holographic understanding of reality that grounds Hindu dharma.

A valid defense of Hindu Dharma against fragmentary and predatory vested interests
By INDER JIT SINGH MANN
Book review by S.Mann, PhD, an independent Business Consultant with deep interest in literature, inter-cultural studies and Hindu Dharm

Indra’s Net is an exquisitely well-researched and penetrating defense of the philosophical unity of the Dharmic traditions. A vividly compelling read, the book has the potential to catalyze an appropriate response against fragmentary and predatory vested interests working against Hindu Dharm, so as to prevent the loss of its nuclear concepts and eventual dissolution. It is a brave and commendable appeal on the part of Mr. Rajiv Malhotra for not allowing to go unchallenged, the insidious attempts to fragment Hindu Dharm and philosophy by the reductionist and short-sighted interpretations from an alien perspective. The book stands a worthy warrior, guarding what is a centuries-old, empirical, tested and tried, scientific system of thought. The metaphor of Indra’s net has been used to provide an analogy to denote the different levels of vastness, interconnectivity, as well as unity-in-diversity concepts of the Hindu Dharm. The book is a serious rebuttal of the cultural neo-colonialism, wearing the guise of globalization that has set into motion forces which furiously attempt a siege on the Hindu Dharm from the inside. It is a magnificent reminder of the fact that the ‘West’ does not always have to be the agent of change - and every country, culture and religion will always have the fundamental right to decide what it should accept or reject.

First of all, Rajiv Malhotra empirically demolishes (with substantial textual and historical evidence) the myth that Hinduism is an artificial construct created by thinkers like Vivekanand in response to the erstwhile colonial challenge. On the contrary, Hinduism factually emerges a lush and robust thought system that has survived and adapted to innumerable changes since prehistoric times rendering its scope beyond the hollow and reductionist logic of antagonistic Western ‘thinkers’. Hinduism is a tradition that is vibrant, alive and is supremely vaster than any one thinker, avatar or deity. Adi Shankaracharya as well as Swami Vivekanand, though existing in time-frames more than a thousand years apart, were both very integral part of the growth and evolution of Hindu thought. Additionally, both were valid interpreters of the Dharm in the context of their own times. Vivekanand had to address the consciousness of a nation undergoing a radical and forcefully invasive imposition as well as to position Vedant as a science in its own right with all its claims and experiences open to experimentation and validation. He made Vedant relevant to every householder rather than just the seekers of Moksh. This was in line with the ongoing consolidation of Hinduism as a movement towards an expanded sense of astik with many schools of thought and lineages being absorbed in it.

Rajiv Malhotra uses a prodigiously telling phrase “audacity of being different” to clarify that Hindu Dharm has some very basic differences from the Abrahamic religions. The most vital difference is that Hindus do not need a Prophet or a Messiah to connect to God. Abrahamic religions are primarily history-centric, and depending upon a singular historical revelation, wherein the ultimate truth is limited to a few select prophets and is made available to the many solely through them. As an academic example, a layman’s claim to a direct revelation or conversation with God would be tantamount to blasphemy in the eyes of the Abrahamic religious orders. By contrast, Hinduism is not history centric and is not dependent upon any specific incident, revelation-history, or person for its validity. Everyone is divine with the potential to discover one’s own divinity and has the prerogative to validate the experience of rishis as texted in shruti. This is in sharp contrast to, say, the Christian concept of all being ‘born sinners’ because of the primal sin of Adam and Eve.

Some basic concepts of Hinduism like the nature of Brahm both manifest and unmanifest and the related concept of mithya are succinctly explained. The complementary nature of Shruti with yog and anubhav, gyan with vigyan, para and apara knowledge with adhyatam vidya, are explained in a crisp and insightful manner. Hinduism is likened to an ecosystem where new species are born and nurtured and older species adapt or may even die. Another comparison is with an open architecture (and IT term), with a variety of modular components available to suit individual choices and needs, with the built-in potential for growth and experimentation within limits. There is place for all astik thought systems, and due respect for intercultural fertilization which stems from a genuine desire to enrich humanity at large.

At the same time, this very nurturing openness and inclusiveness makes Hinduism vulnerable to fragmentation and digestion by predators. Rajiv Malhotra provides numerous examples and explains this construct, and the process of digestion. Unfortunately, the sinister implications of this process of digestion are many and all too real: the tendency to treat the Hindu sources as irrelevant, scope for serious distortions or misunderstanding, generating interest in the superficial and the loss of contact with the true Dharmic source, and the potential that the original idea never reaches full fruition.

Rajiv Malhotra initiates a very meaningful and critical debate on safeguarding the core of Hindu Dharm. Hinduism’s core tenant is that we are all born divine (sat chit anand) and that the basic premise of Karm and reincarnation are non-negotiable. This along with Jivamukti can be assigned a nuclear role in Hindu Dharm. He constantly reiterates that Karm and reincarnation can never be removed from Vedant nor can Yog be separated from its own yam and niyam, as well as the fundamental unity-of-nature that is at the heart of Hinduism. All ideologies that are grounded in the nastic concept and those that are in contradiction with any of these basic premises need to be recognized and should not be allowed to infiltrate the Dharmic tradition. He discusses some strategies like the “poison pill” and the porcupine defense and welcomes inputs and elaboration in this field.

This book may not be for the faint of heart but it is unquestionably the holy grail of “must-reads” for all who have a stake in the future of Hinduism as a coherent tradition with its respected place in world religions. Thus it is not just for scholars of religion but for everyone who truly believes in the basic human right to dignity and independent thought including respect for his/her own race, culture, religion and language. Millenniums-old Dharmic traditions cannot be allowed to be misinterpreted with malignant and insidious intent lest the future generations are deprived of the most invaluable heritage of all - their right to reach God. Indra’s Net equips the reader with a sound knowledge base and provides a holistic perspective that is indispensable in overcoming the insular cocoon of complacency so dangerous in today’s world. The book is a clarion call to establish the place of Hinduism among the world’s traditions and to prepare this generation and all those that follow to overcome the most strident challenges in an age of unprecedented threats and opportunities.

A definitive response to anti-Hindu rhetoric
By S.K.
Most Hindus are aware of the many Western intellectuals who romanticized and marveled at the insights and wisdom of Hindu thought. Thanks to Rajiv Malhotra's first book "Invading the Sacred", many Hindus are aware of recent Anti-Hindu scholarship in Western Academia and the names of people behind it.

What in Unknown to most Hindus is the deeply negative counter-current rhetoric that has been brewing in the Western Academia over the last 100 odd years and spilling into and disrupting the peace and tranquility of Hindu neighborhoods and their private community living. Cohesion and alignment of such anti-Hindu polemical scholarship is unmistaken and its shared intent to vilify Hinduism and weaken Hindu identity is evident. Unfortunately, such incessant and unrelenting negative rhetoric has penetrated some of the Westernized intellectuals and journalists in India and is attempting to reach mainstream voice and disrupt Hindu identity.

Negative portrayals of cherished Hindu leaders, who sought to revive Hindu identity and unity, is on the rise. Any attempt to speak of Hindu identity is trashed as incoherence and mindless homogenization. Great Hindu leaders like Swami Vivekananda are portrayed as wily Hindu nationalists who sought Hindu unity for political expedience. Any practicing peaceful Hindu, who has read Swami Vivekananda and experienced the positive outlook for their unity and identity and found their lives enriched as a process, is flabbergasted to hear such treachery is seeping into their very own backyard masquerading as scholarship and historical analysis.

Indra's Net is a timely response to set the matters straight. Hindus are at a critical juncture with this avalache of negative portrayals crashing in. Their inward focus will no longer do. Hindu scholarship needs to respond and correct the narrative. Hindus should take charge of their own grand narrative.

Rajiv Malhotra's second book Breaking India highlighted how some negative forces are manifesting in India to disrupt and break India, to weaken any efforts among Hindus to find a common identity.

In his next book Being Different, Rajiv Malhotra shows the common heritage to all Dharma traditions and contrast them to Abrahamic religions. He also highlights origins of exclusivity in the history-centric religions, and resulting difference-anxiety-from-above that leads to intolerance in Western minds.

In his new book Indra's Net, Rajiv Malhotra takes on some of the key ideological and intellectual precepts on which these divisive forces operate. Rajiv Malhotra systematically identifies some of the key myths on which these negative narratives and portrayals are built, debunks those myths, and exposes the myth-makers.

For the anti-Hindu camp, there is one fatal flaw in this book: book makes eminent sense and more importantly brings understanding of Hindu unity. Prejudice is the death knell for the anti-Hindu scholarship.

Highly recommended book not only to understand the integral unity that forms the common base on which Hindu diversity, pluralism, and dynamism thrive but also expose the true colors of disruptive forces that seek to undermine and misrepresent it.

Provocative But Perimetric
By L. Ron Gardner
I was inititially attracted to this book because I recently began working on a Buddadharma text and need to bone up on Indra's Net because of its central role in Hua Yen Buddhism. I wanted to get a nuanced Hindu perspective-- with Brahman, and not emptiness, as the noumenal foundation of the Net--and this book provided it, to a limited extent. However, because this book is essentially about "defending Hinduism's philosophical unity," it did not deeply consider the Vedic view of Indra's Net versus the Buddhist.

What this book does deeply consider, however, is how modern and post-modern intellectual forces in the West are conspiring to de-legitimize Hinduism as a genuine and coherent religion. And according to Malhotra, the reason they do this is "to protect Western hegemony." These forces, he says, have an academic and political agenda which is best served by depicting Hinduism as a "random juxtaposition of incoherent and fragmented traditions." By undermining any idea of coherency in Indian civilization, these forces in effect champion Western supremacy. As Malhotra puts it, "In the intellectual kurukshetra of globalization, civilizations compete to gain `mindshare.'"

Malhotra has little regard for the prevalent Western ethos or "mindset" that is behind the attack on a legitimate Hinduism. He views the West as representing "brute-force reduction of diversity into homogenity, where diverse living substances are transformed into uniformly lifeless ashes." The West, as he sees it, is about normative order rather than profound, variegated culture.

According to Malhotra (who uses the term "neo" in a disparaging sense, as a synonym for "pseudo"), the thesis of the neo-Hinduism forces looking to subvert Hinduism can be summarized thus:

1) Swami Vivekananda manufactured a new religion, popularly called Hinduism, and other Indian nationalists such as Gandhi, Radhakrihnan, Rabindranath Tagore, and Sri Aurobindo subsequently crystallized it.

2) The Bhagavad Gita was not a central text until Western Indologists made it important.

3) Christian ideals of helping society and Western secular theories of social ethics inspired Indian nationalists appropriate them; karma yoga was used merely as a garb to make the plagiarized ideas look Hindu.

4) Hinduism is inherently oppressive of minorities such as Muslims, Christians, Dalits, and women. It forces others into its own homogeneity for gaining political control. Hindutva is its latest incarnation and its goal has been to impose homogeneity.

5) Hinduism is a dangerous conspiracy that is being spread worldwide by duping naïve Westerners into thinking that it is a genuine tradition of peace and equality, which it is not.

Malhotra provides an in-depth counter-thesis to the neo-Hindu thesis, and anyone interested in the debate between these two diametrically opposed theses will doubtless find this book a compelling read.

Who exactly are the founders and proselytizers of the neo-Hinduism thesis? Malhotra identifies them, providing about twenty names. Most of these people are academics with an agenda, and once you have their names, you can, if you're so inclined, find and read what they've written on the subject.

Malhotra is a genuine scholar, and in the course of elaborating his thesis, he provides interesting material on the spiritual history of India. He's clearly a big fan of Swami Vivekananda, and presents arguments to defend him against his detractors. He also has a lot to say about Shankara, which should be of interest to students of Advaita Vedanta.

While I found this text an interesting and educational read, I felt that it didn't identify the "disease" that is causing the "symptom" of neo-Hinduism. Although the text properly identifies the agenda and limitations of the modern Western Weltanschauung; it fails to get to the root of the problem: Progressivism, left-wing neo-Marxist fascism, an ideology coincident with America being hijacked and effectively privatized by a private, central Banking Cartel in 1913. This private Banking Cartel named itself The Federal Reserve, but it is not Federal at all, and neither is its collection agency, the Internal Revenue Service. In the twentieth century, Progressivism took over the American educational system, and 94% of all university professors now identify themselves as Progressives, or left-wing liberals. In short, it is this cancerous Progressivism, being peddled around the world as "Integral Globalism" by the likes of Ken Wilber, which is overtly and covertly waging war on Hinduism and any ideology anathema to its hegemony.

In summary, this text is provocative and worth reading, but it is also perimetric because it doesn't identify the "Heart of the Beast" seeking to de-legitimize Hinduism--Progressivism.

A Must for Any Home Cook - Paleo or Not
By Yes to Yummy
I am a fifteen year-old aspiring chef, and I LOVE to cook--especially wholesome, healthy food. I have been a fan of Nom Nom Paleo for a while now, and I've been anxiously waiting for the cookbook's release since I pre-ordered back in June.

My expectations were way beyond exceeded. The cookbook itself is absolutely gorgeous--it has a big, solid cover, easily turnable pages, and beautiful pictures that really make you hungry! You'd never guess that this was a "paleo" cookbook: it looks (and is) very professional.

Whether you are an experienced chef or a newbie home cook, you'll find a recipe that's just right for you. There are simple dishes, like shrimp and watermelon skewers, that are perfect for quick weeknight dinners, and more complex dishes, like the Southwest Cowboy Chili, that are great projects for weekend culinary adventures. So far, I have made the Spicy Coconut Shrimp, Peruvian Spatchcocked Chicken, Slow-Cooker Kahlua Pig, Polpette di Vitello, and Egg Fo Young--all five have been tasty, easy to prepare, and really pretty on the plate. (My favorite so far? Hands-down the Peruvian Spatchcocked Chicken.) I'm also looking forward to trying the Slow-Cooker Korean Short Ribs, Devils on Horseback, Pistachio Apple Salad, and Crispy Gizzard Confit, among many others...I know I'll keep turning back to this cookbook for months to come.

One other review complained that the recipes were "too simple." In my opinion, we sometimes get so wrapped up in fancy, complicated preparations that we forget what tastes best: things like a warm baked sweet potato, slow-cooked roast beef, or a perfect hardboiled egg. Michelle's recipes have really inspired me to get back to basics and just enjoy the taste of simply prepared vegetables and protein.

I'd highly recommend this cookbook for anyone who is passionate about healthy food, from those just exploring paleo to old-time pros. I promise you won't be disappointed.

Umamilicious!
By LCW
This is one of the cookbooks I've been eagerly waiting for this year. When it finally arrived it did not disappoint. I've cooked from the author's blog for quite a while now so I had already made a few of the recipes in this book. Time hasn't permitted me to do a big cookup all at once but I've spent the past week slowly cooking my way through the book with delicious results.

My favorite thing about Michelle Tam's cooking style is that she uses a lot of ingredients that bring umami to your dish. Umami is that savory meaty flavor that comes from naturally occurring forms of glutamate (not to be confused with MSG...stay away from that junk) and a few other amino acids. It fires up your taste buds while filling your entire mouth with full deep flavor. You know those rich savory dishes that are just so incredibly delicious but you just can't quite put your finger on why? That's umami! Ingredients like mushrooms, beef, seaweed, fish sauce, tomato paste, caramelized onions are just a few of the ingredients that bring this special flavor to your dish and this cookbook is full of them.

The book begins with her and her husband's journey to Paleo, the basic 411 on what exactly Paleo is, as well her tips and tricks for running a kitchen as smoothly as possible. My favorite are the defrost bowl, which I've done forever and it's a huge time saver, as well as defrosting meat (wrapped in plastic...you don't want the water actually touching the meat) in water to defrost in a flash. I've done that for years but I always thought of it as my dirty little secret because I thought somehow it wasn't the safest or most sanitary thing. It was just too easy and convenient to stop though. My mind has been eased as it is apparently perfectly fine and safe. Yay!

I appreciate the fact that all of these recipes are actually Paleo and that the treat section is kept to a minimum. The recipes aren't full of copious amounts of sweeteners like maple syrup, dates, or honey. The author does use honey in a few but it's usually just a tablespoon or two. As someone who does a lower carb version of Paleo I can live with that small amount.

There are some non-recipe recipes that take up a lot of space. I prefer it when authors condense easy staples like zucchini noodles, mashed cauliflower, roasted squash, etc into a couple pages instead of each taking up the same space, or more, as a "real" recipe. Well Fed 2 does this perfectly. Still, I don't feel like these were added gratuitously to bulk up the book and I, as a reader, don't feel like I got conned into buying a book full of "recipes" for things like scrambled eggs and veggies, steamed broccoli, etc. For that reason this small nit pick doesn't merit any deductions in rating. It really is an excellent cookbook that is at the forefront of what is available in the genre right now.

There's a Building Blocks section full of condiments and ideas to quickly and easily boost the flavors of your meal. I love it when cookbooks put effort into things like this. Sometimes on a weeknight I just don't have the time to experiment with an entire recipe from scratch but sear or grill some meat with a fabulous new spice mix, sauce, or dressing and you have a delicious new culinary adventure on the table in minutes.

Despite this being a busy week I actually got to try out quite a few of her recipes (as well as having already cooked several from the blog) because so many are so fast and easy! Here's what I've made so far and what I thought of it:

-Dukkah: Love this blend. Initially I thought it was going to be too high of a spice to nut ratio but it actually works. It's delicious!

-Slow Roasted Tomatoes: Yum! This is a technique I knew about but never actually did. It's really fast as most of the work is done in the oven. I had them with a French Omelette (also in the book).

-Caramelized onions- I made a big batch of these to have them ready to add fast flavor to quick meals through the week. These do take some time and attention but do it all at once and enjoy them for several days.

-Ghee: I've been making ghee for years and I love it. This should be a staple in everyone's kitchen!!

-Macadamia Nut "Ricotta": It's like cashew "cheese" but with macadamia nuts. And fewer carbs with a healthier fat profile! Plus it tastes amazing!

-Citrus Vinaigrette: Bright tangy citrus flavors that light up your mouth. Super easy but super delicious!

-Devils On Horseback: Normally I don't do fussy little hors d'oeuvres type dishes but I already had the macadamia nut cheese and it looked really easy so I was like why the heck not. They are like bacon wrapped dates but better. They're not as sweet and a little more complex in flavor. An excellent idea!!

-Tomato and Basil Salad: I just so happened to have some nice heirloom tomatoes that needed to get used so this was perfect. Another fast easy dish that adds so much flavor.

-Madras Chicken Salad- Yum!! A delicious herby curried chicken salad. Some of these types of recipes get overwhelmed with the curry powder but this strikes the perfect balance of flavors. Next time I make this I'm going to try grapes in it! Or mango!

-Classic Coleslaw- A delicious version of a classic dish. The sesame seeds are the perfect touch and IMO they make the dish.

-Fast/Slow Pho- I did the slow method as I don't have a pressure cooker. I can't fully evaluate this recipe as I used subpar spices resulting in a bland broth. I ran out of my Penzy's coriander, which I love, so used coriander and star anise of questionable quality. I had to doctor up the broth to give it more flavor but I really think it was the spices I used. With the doctoring (garam masala, more ginger, and fresh lemon grass) it came out really good. It's a delicious idea and is a great lower carb dish for those of us watching carbs. Oh and I have an order in to Penzy's for more of the good stuff to try again. This is also not that much work. It's a set it and forget it type dish. ETA: It was definitely the crappy quality spices. Much improved with the good stuff from Penzy's. Although if you have fresh lemongrass it makes a delicious addition. I've made this 5-6 times since. I love it!!

-Thai and French Omelettes: I love that she included these. The french omelette is a good reminder to pay attention to technique. You will be rewarded with a delicious soft fluffy omelette. I used Penzy's Sunny Paris spice mix in it. The thai omlette is amazing. So simple but packed full of flavor. Both are fast and easy enough to make on a weekday morning.

-Broccoli Bagna Cauda: I love baugna cauda sauce but I've only ever had it on fish. This was a new idea that totally works!!

-Spicy Tuna Cakes: These make a delicious fast weeknight meal. I had them cold for brunch the next day too. I didn't have any sweet potatoes so I subbed pumpkin puree and it worked great. Fewer carbs too!

-Fiona's Green Chicken: This is a recipe from her blog that I've made many times. It's amazing. Bright, minty, citrusy, grassy and good! I've done it with grilled pork chops and it made a delicious turkey breast as well. It's a delicious and versatile staple for me.

-Crispy Smashed Chicken: This is the perfect weeknight meal. You can spice it up and top it however you want. I used Penzy's Arizona spice mix in the coating for the chicken and topped with pico de gallo. The cookbook recommends her Spicy Pineapple Salsa or Salsa Roja Asada (both are in the book). Either one sounds amazing and I am going to do the pineapple salsa next time!

-Slow Cooker Chicken and Gravy: Another recipe from her blog I've made quite a few times. It's easy and delicious. The "gravy" is sensational and a good way to use up the veggies from the bottom of the roasting pan that I've previously always tossed. What a huge mistake I've been making!

-Slow Cooker Korean Short Ribs: Short ribs are my favorite cut of beef so I always have to try any new recipe for them. This is amazing. Sweet and savory beefy goodness! I've seen this recipe on her blog but never actually tried it until the book came. It's another fast "set it and forget it" type recipe. I made both this and the Pho in no time at all on weeknights.

-Big O Bacon Burgers: This is a big 'ol whollup of umami for your taste buds. So delicious! Luckily I made a big batch and froze individual patties now they'll be ready even faster next time.

-Loco Moco: I'm from HI and this is a staple there. Using the Big O Bacon burgers just ups the flavor even more. I subbed umami gravy for the slow cooker gravy because that's what I had in the fridge. Served with cauliflower rice it's pure paleo comfort food!! I top mine with Furikake as well.

-Cinnamon Apple Scones: These are on the authors blog and I've made them plain, with the apples, and with pears. All the variations came out amazing.

-Strawberry banana ice cream: Do I even need to tell anyone that this is delicious? Well it is. I've done all kinds of berries and frozen fruits as well.

For not having a ton of time this week I sure have made a lot of recipes from this book. This is one of those books where I literally want to make every single recipe. Soon up to try are the Crispy Confit Chicken Gizzards, Magic Mushroom Powder, Magic Poached Tuna, Kahlua Slow Cooker Pig, Eggplant "Ricotta" Stacks, Uova In Purgatorio (spicy meat sauce baked eggs), and the Coconut Pineapple Fried "Rice". I could go on and on!

Paleo or not this book is full of good food and would be a great addition to anyone's kitchen!

This book may bring your life more happiness than sriracha.
By Charles
I'm pretty sure this book is the most highly-anticipated cookbook to hit the market (Paleo or otherwise) in quite some time. Yes, we know, there are lots of Paleo books on the market (we have two, and an e-book). But this one, well it's different.

It was not super surprising to hear that Michelle Tam and Henry Fong were going to be unleashing even more deliciousness to the world via Nom Nom's eponymous masterpiece (Nom Nom Paleo: Food For Humans). Despite having been somewhat on the inside loop knowing that this book was coming out, to say that I was beyond amazed once I got to see the book in the flesh would be a gross understatement. As I am very much a visual learner, seeing recipes accompanied by sometimes as many as 12 or 15 step-by-step photos is immeasurably helpful, providing the home cook with some guidelines as to what they should be doing and how things should be looking at varying steps during the cooking process. And, not worrying about ruining my iPad with some kitchen foibles was an added bonus (as the iPad app also includes lovely step-by-step photos).

Michelle's personality, her spunk and kitchen knowledge come across in spades in this piece of art. While I hesitate to use the word "foodie" to describe Michelle and Henry (a term I think gets over-used and abused), I can say unequivocally that these two LOVE food, and it is absolutely evident in the book. Michelle's educational background in nutritional and food science not to mention the in-home exposure to really tasty eats thanks to growing up in her mom's kitchen provided a strong foundation for such a love of all things culinary. As Michelle even shared in a recent blog post, when she travels, food experiences are her priority (adding that she "canceled a visit to see Michaelangelo’s David at the Galleria dell’Accademia because it got in the way of finding the best bollito misto in Florence"). It's this obsession with food that takes Nom Nom Paleo: Food For Humans to the next level.

While the over 100 recipes are fun, delicious and very often simple and easy to make, the animations and the special sections detailing everything from tool time to 20 tips to get you started in the kitchen to feeding kids this way to a fun cartoon about how Michelle lives her life as a blogger, mom, wife and nightshift working pharmacist are a visual feast and a veritable treasure trove for anyone and everyone - not just those living the Paleo lifestyle. While the book has Paleo in the title, this book deserves a place on just about every kitchen shelf (okay, maybe not a vegan's, as they might not like the gorgeous pictures of Michelle learning to butcher a cow).

What about the quality of the actual recipes, you say? Well, so far we've made homemade sriracha, siu yoke, kabalagala (plantain fritters) and none have disappointed. We've also bookmarked at least a dozen more we plan on making in the next week or two. For the complete listing of all the recipes included in the book, go to their whole page about the book and click on the section that says "Which recipes are in this book?" Not to mention so many of the recipes in the book are Whole30 compliant (and if you need more Whole30 inspiration you can check out the Nom Nom Paleo site where there are even MORE Whole30 recipes to send you on your merry way).

Still not convinced that you need this book in your life or to give it as a gift? Michelle and Henry are such giving sorts that they have a whole 50 page free downloadable preview for you. Go check it out ([...] all you buyers who need to test-drive something before you buy. Trust us when we say you want this book. You need this book. This book might bring you more happiness than sriracha (well, at the very least it will bring you the happiness that is sriracha via her homemade recipe).

Disclosure: we received an advance copy of this book, and have had a few weeks to test drive some of the recipes and pore over the pages. Our opinions are our own.

Fantastic Primer on Perspective Drawing.
By Jason Cox
This is a fantastic reference for anyone who desires to learn the basics of sketching in perspective. Perspective drawing is the key focus on this book, but it also does a good job at showing how perspective in your drawing compares to scenes in reality.

There are other books out there that teach things that are shown well in this book, but the thing that I think makes this one unique is that it brings so many different aspects of perspective, sketching, and object design together in one place. And while it doesn't include every technique available to a designer or artist, this explains a tremendous toolset that you'll be able to use (very quickly!) to produce most anything you can imagine. Isn't that the goal?

The quality of the book is fantastic (I got the "paperback" version) with some of the thickest paper of any book I own. Each page is in full color (most publishers would have cut corners as many of the images only include spots of color and the temptation to make it greyscale had to be high).

Also included is a link list to video lessons. There is an upcoming app that will allow you to scan images from many of the pages to trigger the videos, but it's not yet available on iOS or Google Play store (at least it didn't show up as linked from the QR code and separate searches). The link list works with your computer or a tablet. I'll update this review when the app becomes available.

If you are unfamiliar with Scott Robertson, I highly recommend searching for him in YouTube. I've been following him for years and have 7 of his drawing, rendering, and designing DVDs from the Gnomon workshop. This book and the videos is a nice companion to those, but much less expensive! (Those DVDs were $30 each). Even with that background, I'm very happy with Scott's latest book.

LOVE this book
By Stephen Glasgow
LOVE this book. I bought it because I wanted to expand on what Scott teaches in his videos, but when I got it I realized that it is more valuable than any book I got in college. The perspective lessons alone make it worth the price of admission so to speak. The other night I was trying to figure out a particularily complicated angle/foreshortening problem. After I was about ready to give up, I flipped through the book and used Scott's techniques to work it out. Can't recommend this enough. Anyone who wants to get better at technical drawing - sci-fi or otherwise - would do well to making this part of their reference library.

Wow, packed with information!
By Farious
When i first got it, i was shocked to see how thick it was. More pages than i thought, seems very thorough of the subject.
I skimmed through the pages, and boy you can tell so much effort is put into this.
It may be difficult to grasp, but you have to reread and take your time trying to understand - you will get it eventually.
The book have many sketches with guidelines, so you have to train yourself to be able to "read" what/how he did it (naturally as you read the book) in order to learn each lesson.
The most amazing aspect of the book is that some section of the book have a video to go with it (online url/link or through electronic scan with ipad or something). It will show and explain certain things much clearer, so i recommend you watch the videos as well.

I was skeptical about it being $34 (on sale too), but after seeing how much information it provides, it is certainly worth it.
Glad i bought the hardcover as well, this is a great entry in my collection of fundamental drawing books.

Administrative Law (Administrative Law (Sage Publications)), by Steven J. Cann

In this new edition, author Steven J. Cann once again enlivens the topic of United States administrative law through the use of recent and "classic" legal cases to make it accessible and interesting to students.  Administrative Law, Fourth Edition is an engaging casebook that presents a unique problem-solving framework that contrasts democracy with the administrative state. This novel approach places the often complex subject matter of U.S. administrative law into a more comprehensible context. The Fourth Edition has been completely updated and revised and includes many new cases to reflect changes in the law since the year 2000.

Review

"Steven J. Cann proves that the study of administrative law need not be a dreary enterprise reserved only for boring bureaucrats and self-serving interest groups. Administrative Law, Third Edition is a lively text that students at all levels will find absorbing and relevant to the solution of many of the most difficult problems facing democratic government in the 21st century."

(Albert P. Melone)

"It has useful insights to offer. Written by a political scientist, it aims to be accessible and avoid legalese. In this it succeeds."

(Colin Crawford Local Government Studies)

From the Publisher
Distinguishing features of this text:

Student-Friendly Conceptual Framework. The book is organized around a conceptual framework that contrasts democracy with the administrative state or “fourth branch of government” (significant policy making by insulated technocrats and bureaucrats).

Illustrative Cases. Each chapter begins with a scenario, or case in point, presented somewhat polemically, to pique the students' interest. These cases demonstrate the central point of the chapter, and, often, the student is referred back to that case to illustrate concepts throughout the chapter.

More Case Content. In contrast to other texts that use cases, this book includes more cases and more of each case so students can better grasp what led to the lawsuit and how the Court resolved it. In addition to the introductory case in point, the book presents cases throughout each chapter and chapters end with several more cases relevant to the chapter material. The cases in the middle of chapters tend to be “classics,” whereas the cases ending each chapter represent more recent decisions on the same points of law.

Summary of Doctrines. Each chapter includes a summary of administrative law doctrines, legal principles, and constitutional tests that students have gleaned from the cases presented in the chapter and that they should be able to apply to the end-of-chapter cases or to hypothetical cases.

Pedagogical Design. The book is designed to be compatible with a problem-solving pedagogical approach. Questions at the end of cases query students' understanding of doctrines, principles, and constitutional tests and whether the court applied those doctrines, principles, and tests; modified them; or ignored them. Also, the summary at the end of each chapter is compatible with a pedagogical approach that uses testing by hypothetical cases and requires students to outline. Case text from the courts is presented in a double-column format, which should make for easy reference to specific cases.

Like the ESPN highlights of Administrative Law
By Whizy
This book was mandatory read for my Public Administration study. Unlike many of the Public Administration/Policy snoozer Text, this one is actually readable and well-worth its weight in gold. In it you'll find cascades of judicial case study on rulings that's shaped the Democracy and Bureaucracy of the United States. Administrative Law provides the reader with highlights into the thought processes (prevailing and dissenting opinions) behind the most relevant Judicial rulings (Supreme, District, Appellate, etc...) that affect our everyday lives as citizens. Equally as important, the Author presents the format in an extremely organized, easy-to-follow, easy-to-understand format for us non-lawyerly-type. I'm compelled to write a review for this book because it's one of the few Textbooks that's profoundly influenced my path in Public Service and provided me with a better understanding and appreciation for the nuts-and-bolts that make our Nation great. The one complaint I do have for the book -and for all Textbooks for that matter- is that it's quite heavy and difficult to lug around in a paperback/magazine-like fashion. In the not-so-distant future, I look forward to buying this reference Text in E-book format.

Amazing
By J
I received the book the day after I ordered it for a nominal delivery charge. The book was just what I needed for class, and it turned out to be the most important class I will take for my degree (at least IMHO). The spine was a bit loose and I found, oh the horror, a page with pink highlighter marks. All in all, I'm happy.

I am enjoying this book and will keep it in my library for future reading and reference. My class even perform a skit out of one of the cases and had a wonderful time making a script.
