About the Author
The husband and wife team Nancy and Randall Faber are internationally known as authors of the Piano Adventures teaching method and over two hundred publications for the piano. They recently founded the Faber Piano Institute in Ann Arbor, MI, where they live with their daughter Vivian. Nancy Faber, who was named "Distinguished Composer of the Year" by the Music Teachers National Association, enjoys a busy schedule of commissions for the concert stage in addition to her educational composing. Recent commissions include "The Snow Queen" for narrator and orchestra, "The Picture My Imagination Has Painted" for Flute Quartet and Piano, and "Trio for Flute, Saxophone and Piano". Her pieces have been heard on U.S. public radio and network television. She studied composition with Joan Tower, William Albright, and British composer Nicholas Maw; piano studies were at the Eastman School and Michigan State University. Randall Faber has toured Korea, Taiwan, Canada and the United Kingdom. He was master teacher for both the World Conference on Piano Pedagogy and the National Conference on Keyboard Pedagogy. He gave recitals in St. Louis, Ann Arbor, as Convention Artist for the North Dakota Music Teachers, and performed as Visiting Artist at the University of Michigan, University of Southern Mississippi, Saginaw State University, and numerous universities throughout South Korea. He was featured clinician for the Nebraska Music Teachers, the Florida Music Teachers and the Pennsylvania Music Teachers Convention, and recently presented his research at the 9th International Conference on Motivation in Lisbon, Portugal. Dr. Faber holds three degrees from the University of Michigan and a Ph.D. from Vanderbilt University. The Fabers advocate piano study not only for personal expression and performance success, but also as a vehicle for the student's creative and cognitive development. Their philosophy is reflected in their writing, their public appearances, and in their own teaching.

Good foundation for students.

The Faber Piano Adventures are a good foundation for students, helping reinforce the basics in technique, performance, theory and musicianship. The lesson book works in conjunction with theory, technique and performance books, but be aware that you are buying the same editions. I've had it happen before when I have bought the 2nd edition of the lesson book, but not theory and therefore had the corresponding pages not match up. Music is printed in relatively big print which is great for student and teacher! Not always the most challenging method book if you have fast learners with talent and ability.

Our daughter recently switched to the Piano Adventures series after two years in Alfred. Definitely a good move. Songs are much more interesting and varied, but instruction is just as clear.

About the Author
Harry Sucher’s fascination with Indians began with a ride on a friend’s Powerplus in 1921. He owned various models, assembling a large collection of antique machines, which in turn led to intensive research into Indian’s complex history. He has spent a lifetime researching and studying motorcycles and the people who helped shape the sport in this country. He started collecting data as a young boy, when many of the motorcycle pioneers were available for personal interviews. Throughout his life, many of the original people assisted him in preparing original manuscripts, thus insuring historical accuracy for years to come.  Harry Sucher lives in California.

Great Book!

This book has the right balance of story and photos. There is plenty of information included for those with more than a passing interest in the Indian Motorcycle Company past and present. However, if you just like skimming through a coffee table book and picking up bits and pieces while you ogle the glossy images... this book provides for you as well. If you like history and motorcycles even a little bit, this is a worthwhile read.

About the Author
Howard Gaskill retired in 2001 as Reader in German at the University of Edinburgh. He is editor of The Poems of Ossian and Related Works (Edinburgh University Press, 1996) and co-editor of From Gaelic to Romantic: Ossianic Translations.

This is the only edition available of Ossian's poems. The influence of this work on literature, art and society of the time cannot be overstated. Napolean carried a copy with him wherever he went. Elias Linroot later used the, apparent same gathering techniques as Macpherson and was probably greatly influenced by him like so many others. Both used somewhat creative editing in putting their Magnum opus together so successfully.

A hoax, but a good one

I did my master's thesis on James Macpherson, who is the author of the Ossian prose-poems, supposedly the work of an ancient Gaelic bard. Macpherson claimed to have translated them, but that was a hoax. Interestingly, though, the language of the poetry (the principal nouns, verbs, and adjectives) prefigure the language of Romantic poetry by 50 years (the subject of my thesis).

Not what it claims to be, but lovely nonetheless

Hugely popular when they were published in the 18th Century, the Poems of Ossian helped sparked the Romantic movement and its interest in folk themes and native mythology. Napoleon read this work, and Goethe referred to it in "The Sorrows of Young Werther." The poems were presented as translations from 6th-Century Scottish manuscripts discovered by MacPherson--or so he claimed. Anachronisms and deviations from other sources made the authenticity of this work suspect from the start, and many have considered the Poems of Ossian to have been composed by MacPherson himself. It might be more accurate to say that MacPherson based this work on authentic sources, interpreting freely as he went. Its tainted history shouldn't detract from enjoyment of this book; MacPherson was no mean poet and he had a real feel for the Celtic sensibility. MacPherson was neither the first author nor the last to over-hype his book; if he were alive today he probably would claim to have "channeled" Ossian.

This is a book that has been needed by those of us in the restoration end of the VW hobby for a long time. Original issues bring big bucks, and there aren't many of them left. I guard my copy with my life. Just about every question that can come up during the restoration of an Oval Window is answered . . . Not only does this book show the original engine, tranny, and brake stuff, but it also shows how to replace a window winder mechanism or adjust a door. There are large readable wiring diagrams, with all the specifications. If you've got an Oval, you've got to have this book. -- Hot VW's Magazine - April 1999
