Entertaining Read

I love this book. It's an entertaining introduction to most of the subjects one didn't learn in college or didn't retain from college... or high school, for that matter.

The authors don't take themselves or their subjects too seriously, so, it's an entertaining read. Not that I've read the entire thing; I'm only on page 128. For the serious reader, they should use it as a reference book to find references to serious information. For entertainment purposes, just turn to any page. You'll get information and humor.

I can read as little or as much as I want. I'll be buying it for friends.

Joel Watson is Professor of Economics at the University of California, San Diego. He received his BA from UCSD and his PhD from Stanford. Witty and clear

As far as economics textbooks go, this one is very readable. Its treatment of the subject is clear and reasonably rigorous on the undergraduate level. The author is also quite witty.

Disappointing

I bought this book because it was the required text for the Open Yale Course on Game Theory. I did not think it was well written and is not easy to follow. Chapter 3's Terminology and Notation section is especially bad. The organization of the book's chapters don't seem to have any rhyme or reason, with some chapters being only two pages long. This came as a surprise to me after reading the reviews for this book. There are no answers in the book for the exercises so you can't be sure if you have correctly understood the lesson. They said that guided exercises were added, but they are really part of the lesson and there is no way you can practice or test yourself with the single guided exercise. What is most glaring is that the book doesn't even mention Evolutionary Stable Strategies. How can a text on Strategy ignore that completely? The only saving grace is that the examples are more realistic than the Open Yale Course, but who cares as long as you learn the lesson. I would not have bought the book and would have stuck with the Open Yale videos alone if I had known.

I found this book well worth my money. It's quite accessible and has great examples. I like the guided problem sets. I just wish the exercises had an answer key. They're great practice.

Considering what others have said before me, I'm not sure that we have read the same book. Or maybe it's just my background, since I do come with considerable supply chain knowledge in my luggage prior to reading this book; I found this a very good book, and not disappointing at all. A bit perhaps, but I will get to that below.

Normally, in most supply chain books I have seen there is ample ink devoted to theories and concepts with a couple of examples thrown in next to illustrative and basic generic figures. Those are books that teach you concepts, but not necessarily how to run your own supply chain.

In this book, each chapter is based around several anecdotes of real life case examples that are meant to illustrate certain concepts, and everything in the chapter evolves around these examples. It is impossible to just read this book from beginning to end and get a sense of supply chain concepts and issues, you really have to follow through and do the math in the examples.

Seen from a manager's or CEO's perspective, you as the reader are invited to take part in the solution of the problem in the supply chain of said manager, by trying to understand how that particular supply chain works, and by calculating what to do next. Some of the anecdotes even read like suspense novels, and on occasion I really felt like wanting to skip the math and flip to the end to see how the story went...but then I would miss the point of how the problem was actually solved.

Having said that, I do agree that the content could have been better structured and laid out, making it easier to spot what this or that section is about. It is not very student-friendly if you are used to having everything served in teaspoon by teaspoon, as we say in Norway. It IS NOT a book for learning by reading and remembering. It IS a book for learning by doing, i.e. taking notes and calculating on your own. The undergraduate student may be overwhelmed by the book, a graduate student should not.

And to those reviewers who could not understand what the numbers in square brackets were...seriously, you can not have read many books in your career...those numbers simply refer to the same number in the list of references in the Bibliography at the end of the book. That is a very common way of referencing, which students should be familiar with.

Disappointment

I'm not sure if the author believes his style is better or just wanted to be different than traditional texts. Either way, it fails. Specifically, he does not explicitly state most formulas. He likes to embed the individual terms within paragraphs of text rather than clearly define the variables. The case studies used drone on and on. Ok, I understand that in real life we are given more information than we need, but jeez, no need to fill droves of pages with irrelevant information. Makes me believe he had a minimum book page quota to meet.

And the student CD was clearly an after thought or a ploy to charge a premium as there is very little on the CD and none of it usefull. Where are the homework data tables? Student notes?

This book is a big disapointment.

Worth reading

The book covers a wide range of concepts regarding the supply chain management (SCM), so that it provides valuable grounds on the subject. In this connection, please note that the book has more than 500 pages! It is among my favorite books on SCM, provided that it addressses most of key issues that either a student or a professional needs. Each chapter contains study cases and examples that help readers to figuring out the chapter theory. At the end of the book are four complementary explanations that many readers might find interesting. This is the case of an e-Beer Game and a handy example of the use of a spreadsheet, those applications being more useful for students than for professionals into the SCM.

PS: I noticed that a few readers should have read a more introductory text before reading the above book. In this connection, "Essentials of Supply Chain Management" (by Michael Hugos) is a helpful book.

Like this series, just two complaints

I have had the houseplant book from this series for many years, and it is my bible for houseplants. I especially love the section on what can go wrong with each specific plant and how to remedy it. So when I finally had an outside garden, I got other books in the series, including this one on flowers. My major complaint is that it is organized by the latin name of flowers (which I never know). You can look up the common names in the index, but it's annoying. I am also disappointed that there is no per-plant commentary on what can go wrong and how to treat it. Instead that topic is a separate 'chapter' in the back, general to all the plants. It's still a useful book, and it's what I refer to if I have questions. I just wish it were more like the old houseplant book's format. I've noticed a lot of plant books' primary use is to identify what kind of plant it is and not focus on care instructions and 'what can go wrong and how to treat that' instructions. This book is better than many I've seen, but still weak in that area.

Technology Educaiton College, Scott Higgin -- One reviewer commented book tends to discuss more of "the drug classes rather than the individual drugs. This is a good approach as individual drugs continue to climb in numbers, the expanding number of potential side effects are confusing. Relying on the drug classes rather than specific drugs will give the technician an idea of possible side effects and interactions without trying to learn the myriad of drugs all at once."

Really, Only Two and One-Half Stars

The information provided in this volume is appropriate to its stated purpose, namely preparing students for licensure and/or certification as pharmacy technicians. It is factual and generally well presented. However, like other volumes in this series, certain editing and styling deficits detract from its usefulness. Most glaring of these is the discrepancy between listings in its Index and the actual pages upon which certain information may be found. Others include spelling and syntactical errors that make the meaning of certain passages unclear. A bit more attention to detail in editing would yield a much improved volume.

I gave this book a half-star more than others in this series because its content is a bit better presented. However, it still suffers from the above-listed shortcomings. The placement of tables in the book and their location according to the Index are especially discrepant.

Inaccurate information

I stumbled on a number of spelling/ grammer errors in the book, but the most critical error so far has been a drug listed on page 149 - Pemoline. This book was published in 2008, but the drug pemoline was withdrawn by the FDA (see below) some three years earlier. Since this is used for a pharmacy tech textbook, you'd think the drug facts would be checked closely. This one fact that I just happened to see makes me doubt the other information contained in the book.

FDA ALERT [10/2005]: Liver Injury Risk and Market Withdrawal

The Agency has concluded that the overall risk of liver toxicity from Cylert and generic pemoline products outweighs the benefits of this drug. In May 2005, Abbott chose to stop sales and marketing of Cylert in the U.S. All generic companies have also agreed to stop sales and marketing of this product (Pemoline tablets and chewable tablets).

this book assumes that you know nothing of international relations and international organizations. thus, in this context it explains things in a very simple straight forward manner. in addition, pease is repetitive in her analysis of realism, liberalism, marxism and feminism. however, i find that her analysis is limited and fails to take a nuanced approach to the aforementioned theories. in short, her analysis is elementary. i really wouldn't recommend this book to anyone, especially in consideration of the price. to me, a book on international organizations should have a brief theory section, but then examine organizations and their problems in greater depth. furthermore, while reading this book, i was struck with the question of whether or not pease actually wrote this book herself, or if her grad students helped her. there appear to be distinct inconsistencies in writing style between chapters. regardless, this book is mediocre, there are plenty of better scholars.

okay for highschool

A noble enterprise indeed, in an understudied field. Theoretical perspectives are the end all and be all of international politics, but Pease's book bites off more than it could ever dream of chewing. Critical theory (Marxist and Feminist) is grossly oversimplified, as she not only leaves the reader with a dearth of literary references to actual writers, but moreover gives these marginal perspectives half the page space that she devotes to Realists and liberals/idealists. The organization of the book, though - offering deductive as well as inductive arguments - is intriguing. The case studies make the book worth buying, though the theoretical synopses that precede them, through questionable portrayals, almost negate their practicality. It is a book without rival only because no one else has undertaken the cause. The book is worth buying, although it is a choice of which Faust himself might approve.

Recent world events demonstrate the need to understand that there are multiple world views that differ from US liberal world view. The UN and other international organizations are, simultaneously, tools of the great powers (the US), agents of imperialism and promotors of democracy, development and human rights. They also reflect masculine values and strategies. Pease strikes the right balance between the theory and practice of international organizations, although an Islamist world view would be helpful in understanding how the UN, NATO, WTO and the Arab League are perceived outside of the West. I recommend this text to anyone interested in understanding the governance of world affairs using the world views others.

Awesome Reference for Veterinary Cross-Sectional Imaging in Small Animals

This is an awesome reference for veterinary cross-sectional imaging in small animals! I received the book as a gift after requesting it. This book is well organized into six an anatomical sections and several subsections within each of the main sections. Each subsection includes brief review (narrative and images) of the appearance of normal and abnormal structures and disorders, respectively, within that subsection. CT images (with and without contrast), MR images (multiple sequences), and some gross and 3-D reconstructed images are included. This book is very clinically applicable and is a must have for anyone studying or routinely using cross-sectional imaging in veterinary medicine!

As an aside, the binding on my book is perfect.

Amazing content!!!! Received a book with the cover not glued to the textblock twice in a row.

The content of the book is amazing ! It's a must have.
However the quality of the books themselves I have received was poor. I have received the book the first time with the cover not glued to the book, shipped it back. I have now received a second one, which has almost issue, the spine cover is only partially glued to the textblock.
It is unfortunate to see that the quality of the print was not optimal, as it is otherwise an amazing book !

A must-have for anybody interested in cross-sectional imaging in dogs and cats; high quality atlas

This atlas represents a comprehensive compilation of cross-sectional (computed tomography, CT, and magnetic resonance, MR) images of normal anatomy and a wide range of pathologic conditions in dogs and cats. The book is logically structured into 6 sections (head and neck, brain, spine, thorax, abdomen and musculoskeletal system). A brief introduction and literature review at the beginning of each chapter provides an excellent and concise overview over relevant normal findings, anatomic variations, and pathologic lesions to be covered in the following imaging part. Multiple images are provided for each topic, often including both CT and MR images in various window settings and sequences, multiplanar reconstructions and 3-D volume rendered images of the same animal. Additionally, in many instances endoscopic, intra-operative or gross pathology images are provided along with CT and MR images of a given case, allowing clinical correlation. This is certainly the most comprehensive collection of normal and abnormal CT and MR images in small animal veterinary patients available to date. It does not only include examples of common diseases (e.g., nasal carcinoma or pituitary carcinoma) but also uncommon conditions cross sectional images of which are not easily found in the existing literature (e.g., effects of radiation on the brain or renal secondary parathyroidism). The book is beautifully produced, easy to follow, and the image quality is simply outstanding. Another review mentioned problems with the spine/binding - My copy is flawless, so I did not have the same experience. This atlas is a most valuable resource not only for veterinary radiologists and radiology residents but also for other specialists utilizing cross-sectional imaging (neurologist, internists, surgeons, (radiation) oncologists etc.), for private practitioners with access to CT or MRI, and for veterinary students seeking correlation between diagnostic imaging and pathologic findings. I very much enjoyed reading this book, and I would give it my highest recommendations. It is an absolute must-have for anybody interested in cross-sectional imaging in dogs and cats.
