A charming Christmas romance

Falling For Christmas is the introductory story ( a 0.5 if you will) for the new series Falling For The Freemans which debuts in 2016. We are introduced to a truly tiny town of Creighton Falls, New York, that has been on the downswing over the last years. The main and largest building in town is the hotel which the Freeman family owns and have basically abandoned. There are a very few business still operating, barely… and some are on their very last legs. It is in this tiny, dying town that our heroine finds herself in a blinding blizzard.

Hannah had gotten into her car and simply drove. She was escaping a fancy Christmas weekend house party full of her colleagues and one ex-boyfriend. The ex with his new girlfriend on his arm … and the snide and hurtful comments, glances and knowing cuts from the people she worked with. She escaped from an estate full of plastic, mean hearted, nasty people straight into a raging snowstorm. Driving almost 300 miles from New York City might not have been the best idea Hannah had ever thought up – but she could not stay there and the drive on the highway had left her mind open to just reliving the past. Now with the snow falling faster than her windshield wipers could keep up with she decided to turn off at the next exit and look for shelter.

Creighton Falls – home to… nothing. No hotel, no motel, no B & B, just wide open spaces. When she finally saw headlights through the snow she flagged down the driver. That act would change her future.

Sam never expected to find this city beauty on the side of the road, obviously stranded by the snowstorm. The very last thing he wanted was company but he couldn’t leave her out here to freeze. So he offered to take her to the only place he knew that had an extra room… his home. He understood her reluctance, but preservation will almost always win over caution.

Falling For Christmas is a wonderful story of two hurting people who on the surface are globally different – but at the core, they get each other and compliment each other. Sam is suffering and believing that nothing good will ever come his way again. Hannah believes the critical lies of her ex, that she’s not good enough. Together they discover that good can come into your life and that you are more than good enough to love, you are perfect. What more could we possibly want in a romance than the affirmation of what love is supposed to be at the base – love, respect and liking the one who rocks your world? This one deserves to be on your Christmas reading list.

Creating a New Life and Love

Stranded in snow, no warm clothes, and running from humiliation finds Hannah Ford at the end of the off ramp to Creighton Falls. There is nothing in sight-not a gas station, not a house, nothing except falling snow and darkness. As she is starting off to find anything resembling life, two giant headlights appear and she flags the truck down.
Inside the truck is Sam Taylor, a very reclusive man, who offers to let her stay at his place as there is no hotel or B&B in Creighton Falls. Reluctantly, Hannah agrees to go home with him as she doesn’t really have any other alternative but to freeze in her car. It seems like fate has had a hand in their meeting but it might not be a lasting fate but one that does change their lives.

Lovely holiday read

When Hannah Ford got upset at a holiday party when her ex-boyfriend showed up with his new girlfriend she wasn’t thinking straight when she hopped in a car and decided to just drive to get away and clear her head. Right before Christmas she heads north until she ends up near the Canadian border in a small town with a blizzard steadily coming down. Pulling off the highway her small car immediately gets stuck in the unplowed roads.

Sam Taylor is out on the roads that night having come from plowing a driveway when he pulls over to offer Hannah help. With only one place to rent a room in the small town and it being closed for the holidays Sam offers to let Hannah stay with him which she reluctantly agrees to. With the blizzard dropping nearly three feet of snow and the snow plows no where in sight Hannah ends up having to spend the holiday with Sam who is very much used to being alone on the holidays.

Another lovely holiday read that has the characters bringing out the best in each other during a tough situation and dealing with their own ghosts haunting their holidays. Sam and Hannah couldn’t be more opposite of each other but when together they just seem to work.

At novella length this is another great quick read romance I’d recommend to curl up with during the holiday season.

If you want to cultivate humility and be more Christ-like, this book is a must read!

Wonderful book! I enjoyed reading this and could hardly put it down. C.J. Mahaney shared some wonderful insight on pride and how we can weaken our pride and strengthen humility. I read this book to prepare for a presentation that I gave to a women's group. I used some of the suggestions C.J. Mahaney gave on strengthening and cultivating humility. I would recommend this book to everyone. We all battle with pride!

Book Review: Humility

C.J. Mahaney, popular author, pastor, and president of Sovereign Grace Ministries, states that the most important characteristic of "true greatness" is humility. In his book Humility, published in 2005, Mahaney reminds his readers of what it means to be truly great in the sight of God. Every Christian knows that humility is important. But far too few actively pursue humility in their own life. This book helps us to put our belief about humility into practice.

The main point of Humility is that "God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble." Mahaney then expands on this theme throughout the 12 chapters in the book. The first four chapters are more theological in nature. Mahaney examines various verses in the Bible, reminding his readers of the promises of humility and the perils of pride. He also defines greatness according to the scriptures and gives biblical examples of what it means to be truly great in God's sight.

Mahaney spends the last eight chapters giving practical advice on how to work on being truly great by growing your humility. He mentions various ways to start off your day that will help you grow in humility. He also gives advice on how to end each day being focused on true greatness. A very helpful exercise he mentions is to "identify the evidences of grace" in other people. This has been a very rewarding application in my own life. And he even adds humor, by telling his readers to spend time doing some things you're not good at just to encourage yourself to stay humble.

I've found this book to be personally convicting in my life and leadership. I've recently had my leadership team read through the book. We spent time discussing Mahaney's insights on humility and how we should pursue true greatness together.

Only in the past two years have I known much about C. J. Mahaney. Much of what I have learned is a result of the wiki leaks this last year and the controversy surrounding his leave of absence from Sovereign Grace Ministries. These events played a role in me reading this book. I figured the guy who wrote a book on the subject of humility then stepped down to have his character examined, specifically the matter of humility, must take this characteristic and his character extremely seriously.

After having read this book, I really feel like I've had a window into this man's heart. If you've gotten caught up in this controversial discussion about C. J. Mahaney, I encourage you to read this book before being swept away by a torrent of media that might bias your views of this man. Before deciding what we think of Mahaney, we need to see the presupposition under which he operates his Christian life. It is clear that the virtue of humility is cherished by him as it ought to by us all. It is also clear that when this character attribute of his is challenged, he does not take the challenge lightly. I appreciate they lengths at which he took in order to be tested and restored rightly.

I actually read Humility in February just after my recent surgery. I was cooped up in bed for a couple of days, and it seemed like good timing to give this book a read. After having read the book, I heartily recommend this book to every Christian who desires to understand the attribute of humility and the role that it ought to play in each of our lives.

According to Mahaney, "Humility is honestly assessing ourselves in light of God's holiness and our sinfulness." In contrast to humility, Mahaney explains, "Pride is when sinful human beings aspire to the status and position of God and refuse to acknowledge their dependence upon Him." Basically, Mahaney says that our pride is strong when we forget our place before God and try to usurp that place from Him. Mahaney continues, "That's the motive and ultimate purpose of pride - to rob God of legitimate glory and to pursue self-glorification, contending for supremacy with Him." Humility is when we see ourselves the way God sees us, warts and all.

The beauty of it all is that God loves through our sinfulness. We know this because God the Father sent God the Son, who willingly subjected Himself to death on the cross. Mahaney elaborates on the value of Christ's death in respect to the subject of humility,

"Here's an essential truth: To learn true humility, we need more than a redefinition of greatness; we need even more than Jesus' personal example of humble service. What we need is His death..." Why was the death of Jesus necessary? Because all of humanity is corrupt and condemned, and we all have an acute tendency to deny the reality of our lost state before God.

Without first being confronted by Christ's death and encountering the wonder of salvation we cannot walk in humility. Humility requires us to emulate and sacrifice like Christ did when he died, according to Mahaney this is true greatness. What I've just shared covers the material from Parts One and Two of this book. Those two parts help the reader have context for understanding the links between pride, greatness, and humility. Part Three is where Mahaney provides encouragement and methods for practicing humility. This section includes principles to practice at the beginning of the day, the end of the day, and also some special principles.

As each day begins Mahaney challenges the reader to reflect on the wonder of the cross, to acknowledge our need for God, to give gratitude to God, and to practice spiritual disciplines. As an aside he recommends Don Whitney's book, Spiritual Discipline for the Christian Life, a book I am reading at present. Mahaney encourages those who wish to practice humility to take advantage of their commute and make it purposeful time with God. He also challenges the reader to cast their cares upon God.

As the day ends Mahaney cautions the reader from committing cosmic plagiarism. This is when we take credit for what God does in our lives. He also encourages us to accept the gift of sleep, then close the day with expressing gratefulness for Christ's death and resurrection.

As a special focus Mahaney encourages the reader to study the attributes of God, study the doctrine of grace, nbsp;and study the doctrine of sin.

There are a bunch of nuggets to take away from this book. One of the most precious ones that I found was in Mahaney's chapter on encouraging others. This nugget has to do with correcting others. Mahaney says, "Never correct without reminding the individual, at some point, of the gospel. Any conversation including correction must also include the gospel, because biblical correction is incomplete apart from the gospel." This observation of his is absolutely the best snapshot of this book. Always at the center of humility is a message, action, or lifestyle centered on the gospel. This is how it should be. When we rise Christ's resurrection is on our hearts and in our morning prayers. When we walk we proclaim the fulfilled promise of our Savior. When we lay our head down, we rest peacefully in the hands that were pierced for our transgressions, remembering the cost he paid for so great a salvation.

Once again, I recommend reading this book. Then a couple of months after having read it, re-acquaint yourself with the book and review your notes. That is what I did this evening, and it refreshed my soul.

You are in conversation with an individual you do not know well. All of a sudden she makes a fist, extends the pinkie on one side and the thumb on the other, and wiggles the fist with its extended digits. You are mystified. What do you do? The answer is simple: You pull out the _Field Guide to Gestures: How to Identify and Interpret Virtually Every Gesture Known to Man_ (Quirk Books) by Nancy Armstrong and Melissa Wagner. After all, it is pocket sized and full of pictures, and you always have it with you. You find the photo of the gesture, but you ignore the similar one with the fist elevated and the thumb pointed to the open mouth ("Let's Drink") or the one where the thumb is near the ear and the pinkie is near the mouth ("Call me"). No, the gesture is the "Hang Loose"; your partner in conversation is using a sign associated with Hawaiian surfers, but actually traced to Spanish explorers. The gesture derives from "Let's Drink", but as given without the "bottle" gesture, it has no implications of recreational drug use, just "take it easy". If you are in Japan, however, the gesture might mean "six." There is more information available on this gesture, and on over a hundred others in this funny and interesting book. It doesn't matter that you know most of them already; included here are pointing, nodding, hugging, rolling the eyes, and so on. You can find out the history of the gesture, where it might be misunderstood, and exactly how to make it. You will be surprised at how many gestures you already use and take for granted.
For a sample, look at just a few of the gestures that can be made with the hand in a simple pointing configuration. The index finger extended from the fist is universally understood to mean "look over there". Pointing upwards, it means "one". Elevated and wagged it means "No, no, no..." Slashed across the throat it is an utmost gesture of disapproval. Inserted in and out of the fingers of the other hand, it means, well, you know. Tapping the finger on the side of the nose means "We are sharing a secret." Put to pursed lips, it is "Shhhhh!" even without the sound. Put to the side of the head and rotated it means "crazy". There is a special subtlety to this particular gesture in Japan. It means "crazy" when rotated counterclockwise, but "vain" when clockwise. This distinction, however, the authors note, is fading. Amusingly, as with other field guides, there is a disclaimer at the front of the book to say that it can't list the millions of gestures and meanings, and stressing that it therefore cannot guarantee full reliability. Of particular interest to the naughty will be the large section dealing with gestures of disrespect. If you follow the explicit "1-2-3" directions here, you can perform "The Moon" at someone, for instance. Hand signals saying about the same thing are definitely not omitted from this guide.
For a reference book, I found _Field Guide to Gestures_ to be great fun. Thumbs up.

Useful and Funny Guide

If you often find yourself scratching your head, shrugging, or furrowing your eyebrows in confusion because of the non-verbal gestures of others, then this book was written expressly for you! 108 gestures are described, illustrated via drawings, and explained in this handy book. The book is well-organized and gestures are divided into common-sense categories: arrival (handshake), departure (waving), approval (high five), disapproval (finger wag), mating (hair flip), offensive and profane (chin flick), just for emphasis (finger snap), and "no words needed" (crossing fingers).
Although most of the gestures are likely to be familiar to most people, some obscure gestures are included as well (e.g., the fig). In addition to this basic information, the authors provide interesting facts about the origins and variations of gestures. For example, making a "W" with your finger to mean "whatever" was popularized by the 1995 movie, "Clueless." Likewise, they note that the thumbing of the nose has more names than any other gesture, including "pull a snook," "japenese fan," and "pull bacon."
The authors also discuss the meanings of the gestures in various cultures. For example, in parts of Greece, nodding means "no" and shaking the head means "yes." Likewise, making horns with you hand can mean that your a rock fan in the U.S., or signify a cuckold in Mediterranean countries!
Fortunately, the authors approach the subject firmly tongue-in-cheek, and I found myself laughing frequently. Each gesture is also illustrated with a color plate, some of which are hilarious, especially the profane ones that are illustrated by an older woman! A terrific, well-researched little book that is most highly recommended.

Breathtaking, heartpounding & emotional ending, but leaves you with a smile!

Can you say 'Ending it with a bang!' Book 3 starts out very nice. Catching up with Jen and what she has been up too. Some interesting things start to happen, and then she gets a short, but very nice visit with all her friends in NY. When Jen gets home, things go very wrong! I literally don't know where to go from here. The amazingness and shocking things that happen can not possibly be explained without spoilers, and I just can't do that. EK takes us on a ride like we never could have possibly expected or seen coming! But pay attention, because these story lines run deep! We get all the answers here! It is a beautifully crafted work of art to close up our adventure with this amazing group of friends, but leaving us always wishing we can get more, an update, a short little glimpse of what is going on. I mean, they are magics after all.....and young. We have lot's of time!

This book was simply amazing, the journey of emotions that you go through will astound you. I laughed, cried, gasped, squealed, and felt terrified for these characters I have come to know and love over the course of three books. A one point I actually had to put down my reader just to let my emotions settle enough for me to continue on. In short this book is one of the best books I have read in years, and I know that I will be reading it (and more by such a talent story-weaver as Elizabeth) for years to come.

'Soul Choice' is the third book in the 'More Than Magic' series. I recommend reading the books in this series in order. If you like the characters, story arch, and the world Kirke created in the first book, you are sure to like the rest of the books. There is something really special about this series and what Kirke has created. I have loved each and every installment.

This time around Jen hasn't seen her friends or boyfriend, Thomas, is a few months, now that school is back in session. But a weekend between spring breaks is just what she needs to feel connected once again. Unfortunately, there is also a strange vampire threatening her, but being a flight away from her magic friends leaves everyone a bit nervous about her predicament, the distance leaving them feeling helpless. And then things take a turn for the worse, and Jen and friends find themselves in danger they never saw coming.

I find that I really enjoy going through life with Jen. She's easy going, observant, and level headed. She also loves her friends and all their help and insight, yet she is also independent and comfortable on her own. But unlike many heroines I've read, Jen gets help, asks questions, and doesn't ignore things, which I love. Now there were a few times when Jen's pacing borders on too detailed or slow, but I easily forgive it because I feel like I'm just a friend going along for the ride with her, both of us discovering this magical world together.

Along with Jen, what I really love is the camaraderie of her and her friends. Thomas, TS, Dani, Charlie, Mariana, and Ember create such a wonderful group and I love feeling like I'm hanging out with them. They are fun, supportive, and super considerate of Jen and her special circumstances. They are also fiercely loyal and protective, and despite knowing Jen for only a number of months, she is one of them, and they will dive into any danger for her. So I love them all, and am always happy to catch up with them and where they're at in life.

The situations that come about in this story really took me on a ride. There were many unexpected moments, and I found myself reading faster and faster, sitting on pins and needles, anxious for the outcome. There were some nail-biting scenes. There were also some really touching scenes, showing the depth of love between these characters. Then combine the depth of love with the depth of danger, and this story packed it all in until the very end. And a fantastic ending it was! Loved it!

I'm sad that this is the last book of the series. I have loved these characters from the start and will miss their adventures. But I can only hope that Elizabeth writes a little something about them in the future. I'll take anything. A holiday novella. A wedding novella (hint hint). Anything. Thank you for the 'More Than Magic' series!

The country was then ruled by a Calvinist Afrikaner elite who embraced the concept of white supremacy; they believed 'non-whites' would always be 'hewers of wood and carriers of water' (as their Bible foretold). The world knew this system of government as apartheid, and it persisted for 45 years, until Nelson Mandela was freed. This memoir draws a picture of what it was like to live as a boy in that era. And how the experience shaped the writer as a young adult.

About the Author
Brian Clewly Johnson is an Englishman who was born in China and grew up in South Africa. At age 33, for reasons both political and personal, he left South Africa for good. In Britain, he worked for many years at a multinational advertising agency. His profession enabled him to travel worldwide. In 2002, he moved to the US, becoming an American citizen in 2008. He lives at a beach house in Amagansett, New York. He is the father of four children but is known as 'Oupa' to his five grandchildren. In 2004, he published a work of fiction, 'Deep Memory'.

Bareing the soul

Writing about yourself is incredibly hard. How much do you tell? What will your family think about some of your deeper revelations? Brian Johnson seems to have bared all in this memoir of his first twenty years on this earth. But has he? Given a sniff of hidden secrets, the human condition cries out for more. I think Johnson has done a good job and told his reader just enough. He is a very good writer and while the book is a brief read it is a fascinating one.

Excellent resource manual for cardiac rehabilitation

This book provides lots of background information which cannot be found on AACVPR Guidelines for Cardiac Rehabilitation and Secondary Prevention Programs. It best describes atherosclerotic disease,cardiopulmonary response on exercise, strategy on risk factors management and behavioural modifications...etc. Last but not least, the case studies illustrated in this book provide good examples for health care professionals. Therefore they can develop their practice or education on cardiac rehabilitation based on the strong and latest evidence-based support!
