In this slashing attack, the executive director of the Violence Policy Center depicts the National Rifle Association as a sinister organization of immense power. Sugarmann establishes that the group is not monolithic but embraces members who view it as a force to encourage hunting, target-shooting and comparable activities as well as others who see in any curb on the ownership of any firearm an attempt to undermine the American way of life. He reports that the latter faction has dominated the NRA for some time, adding that the association has hundreds of thousands, perhaps millions, of members and lots of money for lobbying, and is in bed with the federal government, which continually sells its adherents "surplus" weapons and ammunition. Set back by the 1991 passage of the Brady bill, the NRA is now trying to recruit more women, children and blacks. Sugarmann offers a new agenda for the NRA, including a call to end its lobbying efforts in Washington, D.C., which most readers will likely find unrealistic. A chilling expose. Photos not seen by PW.

The National Rifle Association will not be happy with this book. Sugarmann carefully marshals the evidence against the NRA and its positions on gun control legislation. He includes a chapter on the infamous "teflon-coated bullet," which is capable of piercing police body armor, and the falling out between the major police associations and the NRA over its failure to support legislation banning sale of the bullet. Lead shot is forbidden to duck hunters because lead-filled ducks might be ingested by endangered eagles, but police receive no such protection from armor-piercing bullets. Guns are one of the few products sold in the United States that do not come under regulating power of a specific federal agency. The debate will end only when this is corrected. Fairness requires that this book be on the shelf next to the NRA literature.

Trying to get at the truth, but where's the references?

I recently found myself in a gun control debate on co.general. Wishing to back myself up with facts, I started to delve into the books and journals dedicated to this only-slightly-less-hot-than-abortion debate. Josh Sugarmann's book isn't exactly useful as a debate tool for either side of the gun control debate, because he's as damning of the organized gun control organizations as he is of the NRA and the gun lobby (which Sugarmann shows to be virtually synonymous). Sugarmann, who himself is a gun control advocate with the Violence Policy Center, thinks that "the truth lies somewhere in the middle" of the debate, and that the average American should beware of the fanatics on both sides who misuse and misconstrue the evidence of violence in our society for their own agendas. He does this by giving us the history of the National Rifle Association, which is also the history of gun control in America, and shows how the organization has shifted over the years from a sporting idea to "Second Amendment fundamentalism" that characterizes it today. Along the way he visits the topics of whether or not the Second Amendment does indeed guarantee the right for an individual to bear arms, what the real problem of firearms in society is, and the lies told by both the NRA and Handgun Control, Inc. Sugarmann's book is easily read, and damn near necessary reading for anyone who is a member of the NRA. However, I fear that any true "Second Amendment fundamentalist" will be put off by Sugarmann's book, because he often doesn't provide the necessary references for his supposedly objective statements of statistics. Which is too bad, because his book has the potential of getting at the truth in the middle.

Josh Sugarman makes his living by deceiving people who know little or nothing about firearms.He tries to win with false rhetoric an argument he can never win based on facts. This book made me almost physically ill.

An extremely slender, sad tale by Bellatín recounts a gay man's reflections on the waning days of sexual excess and the specter of death wrought by AIDS, though here AIDS is a mysterious, nameless plague. Formerly a stylist in a beauty salon in an unnamed city, the narrator, a transvestite, has now transformed the salon into the Terminal, where people who have nowhere to die end their days. The Terminal has become a kind of hospice for dying gay men, the hair dryers and armchairs sold to buy cots and a cooker, the mirrors removed to avoid multiplying the suffering. The manager keeps exotic fish in aquariums, which he keenly observes as an allegory of what's happening in the larger world: as symptoms of the sickness become apparent on his own body, he notices a fungus growing on the angelfish that fatally infects the others. The narrator's brutal reasoning renders Bellatín's tale an unflinching allegory on death. (Aug.)

Author of various works of fiction, translator, writer, director and producerof the feature film Carambola (2005). He currently writes for the London Guardian Weekly and the New York Times travel section.

I would recommend it to anyone

For a book less than 100 pages, I cannot believe how much of an emotional reaction it got out of me. It was definitely worth buying. It helped me shape my perspective more, towards life and my own mortality. I would recommend it to anyone, whether they too are Latino or part of the LGBT community or not, it was a great read. Heavy and full of emotion.

Stunning - beautiful!

At only 63 pages, I hesitate to call this book a novel. As you read, however, the story fills in with a power and depth, along with a backstory of history and motivations that every reader will create for him/herself, that is massive.

The narrator is a man who saved his street-earned money and builds a beauty salon. There it is easy to see that he wants to create a place of beauty and serenity. He loves his aquariums, and talks about how he learned about the different kinds of fish and their needs. I think that, like living underwater in an aquarium, he hopes that his beauty salon will mute the real world.

But an unnamed plague is in his city. It is clearly HIV/AIDS, although it is never mentioned by name. The narrator turns his beauty salon into the Terminal -- selling everything in the place (the hair dryers, the mirrors, the chairs) and buys beds, supplies, and creates a place for men suffering from the disease to die. It is not a place for treatment, or for maudlin talk with loved ones (who are banned, at any rate, from coming in). But a place to come when the only other place open to you to die in is the street.

This book is deeply moving. I understand that the original writing was gorgeous. Certainly Mr. Hollander's translation is unforgettable. This isn't the sort of sad story where I want to cry; this story just left me aghast at the human condition. It seems like some things are so bad that even the angels can only watch mutely, with no clear understanding of what is happening.

Having said all that, don't be put off from reading this work. This writer is a wonderful talent.

Disturbing, Clever Fiction

Bellatin is a major innovator in contemporary fiction finally getting attention in the States with the release of this novella and a recent feature in the NY Times. This is only his second work to be released in the States, but he is well-known in the Spanish-speaking world and Europe for his clever, subversive short works. Readers may find bits reminiscent of Cesar Aira, the Argentinian novelist (or at times Roberto Bolano).

Beauty Salon is narrated in a direct way by a salon owner who has transformed his shop into a Terminal, a place where the dying are tended to in their final days. While the city, epidemic, and time of the novel are left vague, it feels distinctly temporary and familiar. In many ways the epidemic is reminiscent of the experiences of earlier HIV/AIDS patients, being rejected by hospitals, treated like lepers, and left to their friends and communities to take care of them when even their families at times reject them. In fact, the narrator is a transvestite who only takes in men as part of his rigid system of rules for the Terminal. Detaching himself from the suffering around him, the narrator embraces taking care of the fish in aquariums that he has set up in the shop. For him, the fish provide a deeper connection to the world around him than the patients he has taken in and works to stay estranged from.

Bellatin's style is clear, subtle and direct. The richness of his prose is not immediately apparent in the simplicity of the sentences. Eventually though the book won me over and surprised me with its intelligence and immediacy. Since the setting and circumstances are not fully revealed, Beauty Shop remains allegorical. The story feels timeless in its exploration of a man focused on the creation of beauty who finds himself surrounding by ugliness and suffering.

I have to confess that when I heard this book described as an allegory, I feared it would feel remote, cold, and uninviting. I was excited to find my assumption was dead wrong - this book draws you in, strikes you viscerally, and feels vitally familiar.

Are the predictions real?

Just about finished with this book and really enjoyed it. Had read the one before this too. I then, out of curiosity, Googled "Harry Dent". You would not believe the number of articles on how many of his predictions have gone completely bust.
I like his writing style and his level of confidence. I also like all the data he provides. I would take this book as "one more bit of data for your knowledge base" and not as the Bible as to where to put your money.

A big disappointment

I have read most of Dent's books and enjoyed them. This is his weakest by far. I had high hopes, but was left vey disappointed.

Dent made his name on demographics and his spending cycle, which are good tools for directionality but fail to match actual events. He tried to cover this by adding more cycles which stretches reality too far. I have a real problem with his supposed geopolitical cycle and his argument in the book is very poorly done. He has multiple pages of current negative events, but blows off the period of 1983 to 2000 by saying nothing bad happened; ignoring Beirut, Chernobyl, Columbine, Iraq invasion, Tinammen Square, etc. His innovation cycle is supported by some slight of hand that just shows the weakness of the basic argument. All he seems to have left is the sun spot cycle, with such a large time variation to negate its value and no real reason for it to have any effect. His long term cycles are even less credible.

A recession is likely coming, but this book doesn't really present anything new for discussion. I expected so much more.

A bombshell of a book !

This book was a big eye opener ! If Harry Dent a Harvard grad in economics, is correct, the world is about to see the biggest bubble burst in history ! Do you want to bet against it ? Go ahead I dare you. Harry carefully crafted his book of cycles to make predictions about the stock markets around the world. After a 7 year bullish cycle how much longer can the bull market go on ? If he is correct, its time to prepare for major catastrophic events about to take place. Even if a bubble does not burst like he says it will, it won't hurt you to put your money in a safe place while riding out these times. His explanations are written so that anyone can understand what he is saying and why he is saying it. I enjoyed reading his book and give it 5 stars.
