From Publishers Weekly
Starred Review. Matsumoto's nearly European art paired with Japanese manga pacing have made him a fan favorite for years, and he won an Eisner for Tekkonkincreet. In GoGo Monster, he effectively blurs the line between reality, imagination, and madness. Yuki is an outcast elementary school student who feels the presence of invisible monsters at his school. Are Yuki's monsters real or imaginary? The old school groundskeeper has reasons to believe Yuki's monsters do exist, and they seem to influence the level of disciplinary problems at school. While we never see Yuki's monsters outside of the depictions scribbled on his desk, readers share Yuki's other hallucinations. In one troubling scene, his teacher's and classmates' heads are replaced with flowers. Matsumoto brings out the surreal moments in everyday life, such as when Yuki stares into raindrops clinging to his umbrella at the distorted image of his face, replicated a hundred times. The high-contrast contour drawings are heavily influenced by French artists Moebius and Enki Bilal, with occasional nods to the psychedelic works of Milton Glaser and Peter Max. Despite occasionally experimental storytelling, the story is very accessible: Viz has faithfully reproduced the beautiful Japanese edition of the book, complete with red-trimmed pages of exceptional quality and a colorful cardboard sleeve. From Booklist
Although seinen—manga for men—have been published in the U.S. for years, none have taken hold in the marketplace, despite critical praise. This gorgeous presentation of Eisner Award winner Matsumoto’s work deserves to capture more attention from the older readership it hopes to win. In the original graphic novel, third-grader Yuki Tachibana must choose between his imaginary world, in which faces appear in raindrops and unseen beings dance to the music of his harmonica, and the real world of mocking classmates and potential new friends. Taking place over the course of a single school year, Yuki’s struggle to maintain a hold on his dream world turns dark and frightening the closer he gets to new classmate Mokoto. Matsumoto’s scribbly style works perfectly for the story in the childlike way it depicts Yuki’s imaginings and renders the faces of his tormentors as abstractions to intensify Yuki’s sense of alienation. Matsumoto’s examination of an often forgotten period of childhood is powerful, heartbreaking, yet ultimately reassuring. --Eva Volin

First Matsumoto book i read. Don't pass by
By Abdulahi Mohamoud
This was the first matsumoto work i read and it got me hooked to read anything else made by him because it is so different from any other manga i read. Now this can turn some people off because they are not into alternative manga but you should give it a try anyway. i wasn't into this kind of manga when i first got it and it took me a few read throughs to understand it all but the end result was me loving it and now Matsumoto being one of my favorite mangakas. for first time matsumoto readers: don't judge too harshly on matsumotos different art style or weird and abstract way of storytelling. just try to appreciate it for what it's trying to do.

11 O'Clock Comics' Fantastic Recommendation and Mine
By SEA-S
In it's year end wrap up for 2009, 11 O'Clock Comics gave a very favorable review of Gogo Monster and based upon that I dropped it into my cart here. Thanks guys, I owe you one. Judging from the volume of reviews on Amazon, I would never have seen this otherwise and would have been sorely deprived of a piece of work that has stunned me aesthetically and engaged me on multiple literary levels. (Yes, literary levels in a manga.)

I've owned this book for about ten days and am about to start my third reread. Once is not enough to catch the nuances of the story and the detail of the art. After the second reading, I literally dreamed of this book. The last book that I can remember dreaming of was Charlotte's Web and that was 30+ years ago.

You'll need to look at the other reviews (or better yet) buy and read the book yourself, to get details regarding the plot. I want to share the pure experience of this book. What 11 O'Clock did not mention was the sheer tactile pleasure of opening and reading this work. The image above is actually a slip cover. The outside cover of the work is a colourful splash of imagination. More interesting, however, is the imprint on the outside edges of the pages. While initially, this looks like it is a red dye only, there is actually a subtle print within the reds that ties to the overall design. More than that, the edge of the pages are stuck together slightly and you have to pay attention to each page as you turn them.

The overall experience of reading this work (or mine at least) was a rememberance of things past: childhood dreams, the life altering moments of small experiences, the texture and touch of a long lost classic, and the joy of having to think of more than the words on the page to gain the most of the work. In this sense, Gogo Monster ranks in my list of some of the best literature that I read in college (thank you again Dean Grissom A Novel Approach to Life) and works of art that I have traveled thousand of miles to see and enjoy.

Take you time with this one. Every square inch of it is worth savoring.

Now with a new afterword by the author and photographs taken by him during the conflict, this straight-from-the-shoulder account tells the electrifying truth about the helicopter war in Vietnam. This is Robert Mason’s astounding personal story of men at war. A veteran of more than one thousand combat missions, Mason gives staggering descriptions that cut to the heart of the combat experience: the fear and belligerence, the quiet insights and raging madness, the lasting friendships and sudden death—the extreme emotions of a "chickenhawk" in constant danger.

About the Author
Robert Mason enlisted in the army in 1964 and flew more than 1,000 helicopter combat missions before being discharged in 1968.

From AudioFile
This conversational and personal history of a helicopter pilot during the Vietnam War has a narrator who is totally into the spirit of the story. Lots of earthy conversations and conflicts provide ample opportunity for Ganser's particular talent--characterization with vitality. However, he does not annoy with overacting, and he comfortably switches to informative prose. Lots of technical details about these "air ships" and their place in 1960s' warfare are mixed in, and the combination of styles creates the narrative drive of this military memoir. The performance ofChickenhawk, bringing together men and war, is so frank in places that one often feels vicarious involvement. understanding my grandson's return from Afghanistan
By tom bailie
I gave it a 4 only because it's not the original Chicken hawk, my life long favorite book. ( i just keep reading it over and over). Chiken hawk is the original five. Back to the world would get a five if it was Mason's only work..
My farm raised grandson is home from a sixteen month tour of Iraq and two tours Afgahnistan. I sobered him up, got him smoking medical pot, and literally read back in the world to him in the pickup while I had him trapped and stoned! I know Masons work saved his life as i got him through the PTSD progran at the fkn VA! He is now in helicopter school with 48 hours and no longer contemplating suicide!
The war on drugs is almost over here in wash state and our Veterans for Compassionate Care has declared war on veteran suicides.
Bob Mason's book, back in the world will, be the first required reading during the preliminary detox at the Clare residential center for veterans in Spokane Wash.
Bob Mason's writing style and frank honesty does and will continue to save veterans lives !

To understand the Vietnam "Helicopter War" this is a must read.
By David S.
As a combat infantry veteran (aka "Grunt") of the Vietnam War I can fully appreciate this author's work. The concept of using helicopters as the primary means of inserting, supporting and extracting ground troops into hostile jungle territory was initiated in 1965 by the 1st Cavalry Division, dubbed "Airmobile" for this reason. The most famous "test" of this concept occurred at Landing Zones X-Ray and Albany in the Ia Drang Valley during November of that year under the command of Lt. Col. Harold "Hal" Moore, and is documented in both his written work and the highly acclaimed movie "We Were Soldiers." Mr. Mason served as a Warrant Officer / Pilot of the infamous "Huey" helicopter during this as well as countless other Combat Assault and other missions.

Mason's writing is masterful; entertaining, highly credible and convincing. He takes us with him through the rigors of "chopper school" and subsequently half way around the world to Vietnam where he witnesses and experiences the sheer brutality of war. Chopper pilots and crews not only worked under extremely dangerous conditions for extended periods, but also worked exhausting schedules. The accounts of everyday life for him are a revelation to others who served in different capacities. Infantry soldiers naturally consider their personal battle experiences as the most graphic and dangerous, but after reading an account such as "Chickenhawk" we have to admit that while our life on the ground was not enviable, life in the air was no better, and often times much worse. I served a couple years later on the ground with the 1st Cavalry. We considered the choppers as our "lifeline" then, and we appreciate them even more today, attributing our survival in large part to their efforts and sacrifices.

As with many who experienced the Vietnam War personally, Mason unfortunately brought the war home with him in the form of Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). His experience was the basis for the highly acclaimed book "Recovering from the War" by his wife Patience H. C. Mason.

My review cannot fully communicate the value of this exceptionally well written work. I recommend it highly to all those who served, but also to anyone touched personally by the Vietnam War, whether it be family, friend or others simply interested. And finally, I salute you Mr. Mason for your service and dedication; it has not been forgotten.

Good Read!
By Timothy J. Lynch
I was talking to a helicopter friend of mine in her hangar about my fascination with helicopters and how it took hold when I worked for the USFS in 1976. Spruce budworm was ravaging the PNW, mostly the dryer forests of Eastern Washington. My job was as a member of a crew of two to four who were responsible for targeting areas of the forest for sampling. We traveled mostly by helicopter because usually there were no roads and it would take days to hike in. I told her of the "crazy" chopper pilots who had come back from Vietnam and were flying commercially as subcontractor to the USFS. She suggested I read "Chickenhawk," by Robert Mason, if I was interested in that sort of thing. Yes, I am. I was eligible for the draft in '71 but U.S. troop strength had peaked in 1968. Still, like all else in this situation, I worried I might get drafted. I downloaded the book and started reading, putting it down only twice before finishing. Mason's narrative is plainly written and down to earth as he tells us about flying in the jungles of wartime Vietnam. I had heard the pilots I worked with in '76 talk about many of the sorts of situations Mason writes about. I don't remember if I believed them at that time, thinking maybe it's just a little wartime bravado. This is spite of the extreme flying those pilots did with a crew of four, excluding the pilot. After flying with them for just a week, I started bringing extra underwear to work.

I am glad this book found its way to me. A boatload of years have passed since those days for me but I remember the voices and the stories of the pilots, most still wearing battle fatigues. "Chickenhawk" showed me that their stories were true. Remembering again, I knew I was fortunate to have that experience with those guys. "Chickenhawk" is a graphic chronicle of how they got that experience. Read it.

"FORTY DAYS AND A SURRENDERED HEART WILL CHANGE YOUR LIFE." Those were the words that author Celeste Owens wrote to over 100 bloggers in 2010 who decided to take her up on her claim. A Fast that really works!
By Powderkeg42
The 40-Day Surrender Fast This is an excellent approach to fasting. The writer speaks from her experience as well as the experiences of 100 bloggers. This is an easy step by step 40 day journey to changing the things that block us from becoming our best selves. This book will help you to uncover the things that have you stuck and gives you the tools to personal success in your life, relationships, career, etc. Thanks Dr. Celeste for a fasting book that make you feel as though you are walking along side us through our journey. It is comforting to know that you have gone through this and received great success. I know this is possible for me as well.
Revision: I finally finished my fast and had some amazing breakthroughs. During my fast I wanted to have a breakthrough from procrastination and lack of consistency. I had been working on a certification that should have taken me 6 months to complete but was taking me over 2 years to finish. I couldn't seem to complete the tedious paperwork. I would start and then stop. As I prayed and completed the assignments in the "40 day Surrender Fast" book, I began to see some breakthroughs. On day 37, I completed my certification package and was notified yesterday that my certification was approved. Praise God for this breakthrough and Dr. Celeste for answering the call to write this annointed book. I highly recommend this book!

FOCUSED!
By NinaSimone
I was just finishing a 34 Day Daniel Fast and my "mission" was almost complete but still had a few bumps in the road. I decided to give up TV since I had just done food and Dr. Owens leaves the choice up to you. The TV seemed to be my biggest distraction in getting things done. Working through this book and listening to the conference calls every night really helped me focus and have an alloated amount of time to focus on God.

She gives scripture, "homework" and advice from a personal perspective letting you know that she just didn't write the book but she EXPERIENCED it! Thanks for taking us on this journey and allowing us to grow with you, it was great and I will definitely be joining again in September to work on a new "mission"

Surrender with Excellence
By Joy M. Briscoe
Dr. Owens approach to a unique way of fasting is EXCELLENT! The Surrender Fast is not just a fast, it's a LIFESTYLE. Now if ever I have a concern, worry or even a unusual, unexpected event to occur in life, I SURRENDER it and watch God come through every time. I have incorporated the Surrender Fast in my every day life, even when the designated time for the fast is over I enjoy repeatedly reading it as a daily devotional. If your looking for a NEW PERSPECTIVE on life, The 40 Day Surrender Fast will definitely give you one!

The Second Wave (Meta Superhero Novel), by Tom Reynolds

Summer's over, and Connor Connolly is headed back to school to start junior year. But with metabands falling from the sky, the world has changed overnight, and now there are thousands of new metahumans. Just like regular humans, not all metahumans are using their new powers for good. Now, Connor's not only dealing with the pressures of being a super-human and training with his mentor, Midnight, but also has to balance relationships with the people he cares for most-people who find themselves on different sides of the fence when it comes to their feelings about the new metahumans and the impact they're having on everyone else's lives. As the world struggles to adjust to the events of the past few months, Connor's alter ego, Omni, works with The Agency to apprehend law-breaking metahumans, and detain them at the Silver Island Meta Detention Facility. When he's recruited for a job assisting the government agency with disarming one of the most powerful and secretive metas in Bay View City, he never expects the devastation of that mission or the effect it will have on both humans and metas. Is Connor capable of becoming the hero he wants to be?

good 2nd book, doesn't really end on a cliffhanger.
By J. M. Davis
Almost didn't get this book after seeing the review that it ends on a cliffhanger... it doesn't ... not in the sense that I use cliffhanger anyway. As an analogy w/o giving any spoilers, the "cliffhanger" is akin to the shot at the end of XMen: Last Stand where Magneto moves a metal chess piece or Xavier speaking through a formerly comatose hospital patient. Doesn't really affect the main story but does T-up the next one quite well.

it is a "classic part 2" though in that the battle is won but the war still rages on. So... if that's too much of a cliffhanger for you... may be better to wait till #3. (it wasn't for me...)

On a grander level, I'm kinda wondering where Mr. Reynolds is going with this. For the most part all the meta are restricted to Earth... or at least our solar system. So since it's plausible that aliens dropped the meta bands they can do so w/o risking retaliation from us as the meta bands don't allow us to leave the solar system and don't increase our technological knowledge.

I doubt these themes will come up in book 3, but it would be an interesting world to continue to write stories in, especially if those stories get to these issues. HOWEVER... book 2 comes dangerously close to making that a hard transition. There are 4 key things Mr Reynolds does that if the bands were supposed to be some sort of self-contained test of the human race then we're chipping at the walls of that self-containment. I can't really go into 3 of those as ... spoilers... but the 4th... some metas can shrink themselves down to the molecular level. (They are hired by rich people to cure their cancer.) However, a much more interesting use of a molecule sized meta is to help jump-start a nanotechnology revolution. Making the first nano machine is hard... making the 2nd not so much... making the first with the help of a meta... pretty easy.

Couldn't put it down
By Amazon Customer
I really love this series. As a fan of the superhero genre its easy to say that no new ground has been tread, but Tom Reynolds manages to make everything seem fresh. I was worried after the first book that this would devolve into YA drivel, but was pleasantly surprised at the development of Connor. Even though he's 16 you don't get the sense that he's dealing with teenage angst or hormones (most of the time I forgot he was that young until it was mentioned). He comes across as a hero who has really accepted his burden regardless of cost. This allows him to become more than the what we normally get from a follow up novel where the hero over examines if its worth it. The power system lays a unique groundwork for problems and solutions that kept me reading from cover to cover. I liked the ending. Some people didn't, but as a second act it fits right into the universe and set up more books. (Hooray)

An Interesting Concept that Fails to Deliver
By Christopher L. Kingery
I desperately wanted to like this book (along with the first one).

The concept was an interesting idea; for the uninitiated, the series essentially asks the question, "What would happen if mysterious, silver bracelets of unknown origin started showing up by the hundreds and granting amazing and varying abilities to the different people to find them?" The concept is both practical and intriguing. It's practical because it gives you a relatively unique reason to have multiple people (heroes, villains, and the morally ambiguous in-between) running around with super powers. It's intriguing because the mysterious origin can go in so many directions and be easily explored as a sub-plot throughout one or more stories. Are these metallic bands part of some massive, international conspiracy to test new technology are humans? Are they some sort of divine gift, or perhaps provided by aliens as a means of making humans strong enough to be enslaved as military fodder for their own war-time agendas? There are any number of directions the concept could have gone.

Unfortunately, the author fails to take the concept anywhere. It seems every character in the book has given up on exploring the nature of the bracelets before they even begin. So where it could have been a multifaceted mystery to gradually uncover, instead it gets thrown at the reader as "This is why all these people have powers," and then forgotten about.

The other problem I had throughout the book (and the first suffered from this as well, though to a much lesser degree) is the meandering, directionless nature of the plot. It isn't until about 75% of the way into the book that the plot actually feels like it's going anywhere. Up until that point, it feels largely like a day-in-the-life-of-this-hero sort of story, rehashing all the same tired hero-problems that we've seen before (a double life is difficult, it sucks keeping secrets from your best friend and girlfriend, etc.). In addition, the author has a bad habit of introducing a big problem with little preamble, and then ignoring the problem and leaving it largely unresolved.

For details on what I'm talking about above, read on but beware of some spoilers.

*******SOME MINOR SPOILERS AHEAD********

Regarding the meandering plot, there's a plot beat that does go beyond the day-in-the-life type action around a quarter of the way into the story, in which our hero accompanies a team to capture a high-profile businessman who may or may not have powers himself. You might call this an inciting incident, as it sets the ball rolling for what seems like might be a big showdown (which isn't, but more on that later). However, the next event that ties into this one at all doesn't come until about three-fourths of the way into the book, and ends with the hero as little more than a bystander.

Then there's the issue of unresolved issues. There are many, many things that are brought up and left unresolved throughout the story. I understand that this is meant to be part of a series, but it feels less like a "to be continued" and more like "oops, I forgot I started that sub-plot." For example, the hero has one or two run-ins with his best friend where his friend, usually the stereotypical fun and light-hearted side-kick type, is moody and unhappy. Then while out fighting crime, out of the blue the hero is confronted with a group we've heard nothing of earlier (called the Blanks, for reasons I can't remember, and they're anti-meta vigilante's apparently), and lo and behold, the one member of the Blanks to get his mask knocked off in the scuffle happens to the hero's best friend. So what happens next? Absolutely nothing. We get a few lines inside our hero's head about how he can't believe or understand why his best friend belongs to this group, and the issue is forgotten.

********SLIGHTLY BIGGER SPOILERS*********

The ending of the book not only left a number of major threads completely unresolved, but introduced a new one at the last second, as if the author thought the audience needed yet another unresolved story line as an incentive to pick up the next book.

First, several meta's show up demanding all other meta's turn in their bracelets or they'll destroy them by force. You'd think this was a setup for a fun showdown between them and our hero, but instead the supposedly powerless Midnight, our hero's mentor, suddenly out of the blue not only turns out to have meta bands himself, but he also suddenly has a robotic suit of armor powered by one of his meta bands, and he goes up against the villains himself. The most of the battle the audience gets is seeing Midnight and the villains throw each other around a bit while the hero gets the much less interesting responsibility of evacuating the meta-prison that they're fighting around. And not only do we miss the fight (since the hero isn't in it), but we don't even learn how the fight turns out, or who comes out on top.

Instead of our hero fighting three powerful villains, our hero instead dukes it out over a few pages with a fellow heroin as the two have a disagreement over whether to release the dangerous meta-inmates on the city or let them stay and die at the hands of the villains. And that fight itself leaves some unresolved threads, as the hero falls unconscious from the heroin using some strange, unseen power (which is never explained), and wakes up to find the inmates gone to who-knows-where and doing who-knows-what.

Lastly, our hero teleports out of there badly damaged from his brief and less-than-thrilling fight with the heroin, landing in his brother's apartment and unmasking himself just in time for his brother's random girlfriend, who showed up exactly once before, to catch him, but lo and behold (notice how things keep happening out of the blue?), she's not who she said she was (anybody with any sense saw that part coming, at least) and is actually a recruiter for some sort of program or school, which they want the hero to join.

So, we're left with no idea what happened to the villains who were trying to destroy other meta's, and no idea what happened to Midnight who was fighting them. We're left with no idea what happened with his best friend, either why he joined the Blanks or whether or not he's still with them. And we're left with no idea what this 'school program' is, who is running, why they're running it, or whether they're good or bad (or somewhere in between). I don't mind cliffhangers when you've made it clear there will be a sequel, but the author treats these threads less like mysteries to be solved later and more like things we shouldn't bother caring about.

All we really have are a series of three or four big events that seem to occur out of nowhere and with little or no buildup, and no resolution. It's as if the author was writing random day-to-day events for the hero and thought, "Hey, such-and-such would be a cool thing to have happen," and so the author drops that event in without warning. Then, before bothering to resolve any of these events, he got tired of writing and just published what he had already.

*******END SPOILERS********

Another big issue I had was the development (or lack thereof) of the characters. We really aren't given any reasons for why the characters are doing what they're doing. For our main hero, Conner/Omni, we never find out why he feels the need to be a hero. Even in the first book, this isn't an issue that's ever covered. He acts as though having these powers makes him obligated to be a hero, but neither he nor anybody else asks "Why?" Then there's his mentor, Midnight; I understand that he's meant to be mysterious and formidable both physically and mentally, but we don't get even the slightest hint as to how he developed his skills/intellect, or where his apparent unlimited resources come from. And like the hero, we're never given any hint as to why he does what he does. He's basically like Batman with all the skills and cunning, not to mention gadgets to suit any occasion, but without any apparent motive for fighting crime.

On top of not having any explanation for why the characters are doing what they're doing, there also isn't a single character that grows in any way throughout the story. Every single character is exactly the same in the end as they were in the beginning. The only one who comes close to having any character development is Conner's best friend, but that's only in comparison to the first novel; In the first book, he's the happy and peppy sidekick, while the in second book, all we see is him being moody and angry. And for as little interaction and affect his character had, it may has well have just been a different character from the first book altogether.

IN CONCLUSION . . .

You might be wondering at this point why I've even given the book two stars. The truth is, the initial concept was definitely a strong one. Also, though I don't know for sure, I get the sense this book was probably self published (Amazon lists the publisher as "Leonard & Calyer" but the only publications I can find under that imprint are the two books in this series). And while I don't typically like double standards, I have to admit that this is definitely above the average in quality compared to other self published books. There are some typos/grammatical errors (more so than a traditionally published book would have) but not so many that it becomes a distraction.

Besides, part of me is hoping that the author improves his storytelling abilities before taking a crack at the next book in the series. Most of the issues I have really boil down to a single flaw; Reynolds has issues looking at the big picture, to see how all the pieces fit together. If he can get a bitter grip on piecing these disparate events together in a more organic way, while finding at least one purpose to drive the story and build on to a dramatic conclusion, I think he could turn into a marvelous writer.

The Railway Man, by Eric Lomax

A naive young man, a railway enthusiast and radio buff, was caught up in the fall of the British Empire at Singapore in 1942. He was put to work on the 'Railway of Death' -- the Japanese line from Thailand to Burma. Exhaustively and brutally tortured by the Japanese for making a crude radio, Lomax was emotionally ruined by his experiences. Almost 50 years after the war, however, his life was changed by the discovery that his interrogator, the Japanese interpreter, was still alive -- their reconciliation is the culmination of this extraordinary story.

Amazon.com Review
Eric Lomax, a British army soldier, was captured by the Japanese during the Singapore campaign of 1942. A railroad buff since a child, he took strange pleasure in his work as a POW on the Burma-Siam Railroad, which was later the subject of the film Bridge Over the River Kwai. When his captors discovered his detailed drawings of the railway, he was suspected as a spy and tortured for years. Fifty years later he discovered that the interpreter during his tortures was still alive. The two arranged a meeting and Lomax forgave him. Here is the exciting, moving and truthful account.

From Publishers Weekly
Lomax, a British Army signals officer, was captured by the victorious Japanese during the Singapore campaign in 1942. Fascinated by railroads ever since his childhood in Edinburgh, he took what pleasure he could in the irony of his slave-labor assignment as a POW: the construction of the Burma-Siam Railroad, made famous later in the David Lean film Bridge over the River Kwai. When guards discovered his lovingly detailed map of the right-of-way, Lomax was turned over to the Japanese secret police as a suspected spy. In the subsequent torture sessions, the interpreter, a young man named Nagase Takeshi, played a prominent role in the effort to break him down. Half a century later, by what he calls "an incredible and precious coincidence," Lomax learned that Takeshi was still living. A meeting of reconciliation at the Kwai River, which Lomax at first suspected was a fraudulent publicity stunt, was arranged. His graceful and restrained account of how the two men eventually became "blood-brothers" after Lomax granted Takeshi full forgiveness is deeply moving.

From Library Journal
Lomax, the "railway man," was an Englishman in the Royal Signal Corps stationed in Malaya. Trains were his passion, and when Singapore was taken by the Japanese at the start of World War II, he was sent to Thailand as a prisoner of war to work on the infamous Burma-Siam railroad, recalled in the motion picture Bridge on the River Kwai. When the elementary radio he built and a detailed map he sketched were found, he was interrogated as a spy and horrifyingly tortured day after day. The interpreter was as merciless as the torturers, and this was the man Lomax could not forget or forgive. After the war he returned home, psychologically and physically impaired. Almost 50 years later, he learned his tormentor was still alive and had been haunted by his role in the torture of a British POW. The Japanese man could not properly die unless he was forgiven. The last few, too short pages detailing the climactic meeting of the two men are the strongest. Lomax shares his heavyhearted feelings with the reader in a brilliant display of underwriting. A strong choice for most libraries. [The BBC is planning a major film starring John Hurt.]?Ralph DeLucia, Willoughby Wallace Lib., Branford, Conn.

brilliant book
By F21
This book reads like a great novel but when you realise it is a true story written by a man not avowedly social or outgoing, it is a masterpiece of communication. It is an autobiography that is a page turner - a very rare thing. It conveys messages about where people fit in society, or try to fit in. Messages of the madness of war and the lengths people will go to under those conditions and ultimately messages of reconciliation. I think in modern times, Mr Lomax would have been diagnosed with autism and when you consider the traits of autism and the huge suffering that being a prisoner of war would impose on that condition, it is astonishing that he survived to be such a courageous and insightful man. I have not seen the recent film but if you are interested in this story of suffering, courage and reconciliation, I would advise reading the book rather than seeing the film, which seems to focus on a love affair that is barely mentioned in the book. I think the film has taken this story in a completely different direction to sell it in box offices. I would heartily recommend the book.

A wonderful story of overcoming all obstacles and forgiveness
By gvieyrab
If you love WWII stories, you'll find in The Railway Man a different point of view, far from the European front and miles away from the Nazi concentration camps, as Eric Lomax's ordeal developed in the Pacific front, where POW concentration camps, human rights violaciones and the worst expressions of mankind's capacit for brutality were equally displayed.
Held cautive by the Japanese army, Lomax and a group of POWs are forced to work in the Burma-Siam railway, one of the most ambicious and poorly planned civil engineering projects in history. But, instead of telling a story about forced labor under the brazzing sun of Southeast Asia, Lomax shares his experiences as a prisoner entangled in the brutal military "justice" system after he's found in the possession of a handmade map ot the whole Burma-Siam railway system.
His is a story of survival against all odds, about going through the most inhuman treatments, about having to endure the most heinous displays of cruelty exerted from one human being to another, of hating intensely one's enemy and finding that such hate distroys, hurts and extends the torture even if years have gone by. But above all, it is the story of a man learning to leave all of this behind and free himself from the horror of his past by forgiving one of his tormentors.

If you've ever wondered what would you do to someone who put you through hell, should you have the chance to meet them face to face, this is a story you can't miss.

Lest we Forget
By oldrogo
I have read several other books relating to the fall of Malaya, Singapore and The Death Railway by various authors and the human misery that men suffered as prisoners of war. I felt that Eric Lomax tackled this book in different matter to other authors. He wrote in a good straight forward manner, that you felt you were with him, and sharing his experiences, good and bad. He appeared to be a man who put a lot of thought into all he was involved in, good and bad. I can understand the feelings he had for his Japanese Captors, Particularly the ones who ill treated and tortured him.( I am ex-service). The book meant a lot to me as I have served in and visited the various places, where Eric Lomax was in this period of his service. I can understand the mental stress he suffered on his return to civil life, and how hard for your loved ones to understand. At the end of World War 2, there was not much help around to heal mentally, and I can understand the hate he had for his captors in his later life. So it was a major break through when he could understand his Japanese Adversary, was suffering from the horrors going back to his service, and how gradually he could forgive. A great story and well told

Designed as a comprehensively cross-referenced companion to the original Dictionary, this second volume includes over 1,000 new or extended entries. These cover many previously unrecorded patterns, recent attributions, newly discovered design sources and a significant number of additional manufacturers and retailers. Some of the more interesting wares after the original deadline of 1880 have also been included. The social history behind the potters' choice of subject is of considerable interest and, wherever possible, entries include details of the people or events which inspired unidentified patterns or their titles. One new feature is an Appendix illustrating unidentified patterns, important marked examples of which may yet be unearthed by a diligent collector. Interest in these wares has increased dramatically in recent years and the enthusiasm shown for blue and white continues to grow. Volume two of The Dictionary is a sound buy for both passionate and dilettante admirers of 'Blue'. ''

Really Nice Reference Book for Transferware
By Jennifer Windham
Books on transferware (blue and white) pottery are very hard to find. And it's even harder to find a good one, that has enough information to be useful.

This is a VERY nice reference book for transferware pottery. While not every pattern is pictured (an impossible feat considering how many different patterns there are), there are dozens and dozens of example pictures through out. Beautiful patterns - some of which I had never seen before. They also show numerous examples of the original painting or sketch or engraving next to the transferware pattern, which I found very interesting. Many makers/manufacturers marks and date stamps are covered also.

This book doesn't even attempt to assign monetary prices to the patterns, but as a reference book you can't beat it. Well worth the money!

Review
"Brookfield, a leading adult educator, has written by far the most compelling, informed perceptive, and sensible book available on how faculty in higher education may develop themselves as educators and foster transformative learning by their students through the use of critical reflection, He gently demystifies critically reflective learning and teaching with dozens of practical examples from the classroom in different scholarly fields. Lucid, wise, jargon-free, personal and fluently written. Required Reading for educators of adults everywhere and for all faculty development programs." --?Jack Mezirow, emeritus professor of adult education, Teachers College, Columbia University

"Brookfield takes a fresh look at the application of critical reflection to teaching....The reader will find both the familiar and the new covered in this storehouse of insightful, innovative, and practical critically reflective techniques....Most appealing is Brookfield's openness to how the various techniques may be individually tailored by educators to fit unique situations. This makes for a book that is not only richly theory-based, but one that is also critically important for the educator's personal and professional development." --Adult Learning

"Becoming a Critically Reflective Teacher encourages faculty to question academic posturing, accept students' challenges, and face the textured reality of the teaching/learning relationship.... Brookfield provides a colorful map to guide those faculty who enjoy critical reflection. His own story makes for lively reading." --Laura L.B. Border, director, Graduate Teacher Program and the Colorado Preparing Future Faculty Network, University of Colorado, Boulder, J. Staff, Program, & Organization Development

Brookfield offers a very personal and accessible guide to how faculty at any level and across all disciplines can improve their teaching. Applying the principles of adult learning, Brookfield thoughtfully guides teachers through the processes of becoming critically reflective about teaching, confronting the contradictions involved in creating democratic classrooms and using critical reflection as a tool for ongoing personal and professional development.Using numerous examples, Brookfield describes what critical reflection is and why it is so important. He tells how teachers can reframe their teaching by viewing their practice through four distinctive lenses: their autobiographies as teachers and learners, their students' eyes, their colleagues' perceptions, and theoretical literature. He includes specific advice on using practical approaches to critical reflection such as teaching diaries, role model profiles, participant learning portfolios, structured critical conversation. the Critical Incident Classroom Questionnaire, the Good Practices Audit, and more. He explains how the literature of educational research and philosophy can be used as an aid to, rather than an inhibitor of, critical reflection. And he discusses how to create a campus culture that supports critically reflective teaching.

He walks his talk
By Jennie Pearce
Having been in one of Brookfield's workshops I must I think this book captures a lot of what he is about. There are lots of teacher educators out there who write about how important it is to be reflective, or to think critically, without it ever showing in their work. This is something I'm frankly OD'd in in staff developments I've had to go through. But Stephen truly walks his talk. Everything I like about this book I found in his workshop.

One of this book's strengths is that it's very easy to follow. I found it very easy to read and several of the examples could have come from my own classes. The four lenses on practice are things I keep constantly in mind these days having read the book carefully and also seen how Stephen uses them in his workshop. I also found the book extremely helpful in terms of giving me specific techniques. I've always basically agreed that reflection is useful (even if I'm fed up with people telling me) and would improve my teaching but I had little concrete idea about how to go about it. Each of the lenses Stephen examines has lots of techniques and exercises attached to it. One of the most useful was the critical incident questionnaire he explains in the students' eyes lens. I started to use this to evaluate my classes and I've learned lots of surprising things were going on that I had no clue about.

Finally, I appreciated the linking of critical reflection to something a little stronger than just being thoughtful. I'd never really thought about a focus for reflection before, certainly never thought about power dynamics being a focus. And the staff developments I've gone to never really deal with it. This book really got clear in my mind what my own power was as a teacher. I've always known I had it but never really been up front about it. I feel much more comfortable with this now and am ready to make sure my students think I'm using it properly.

An instant classic in adult education.
By A Customer
Brookfield has done it again. An instant classic in adult education. In accessible language and with an uncanny ability to relate humorous and telling anecdotes, Brookfield provides the best available overview of reflective teaching, especially with adults. His notion that we learn to become reflective teachers through the four key lenses of self, students, colleagues, and theory is an important contribution. But what he does to explain how we learn through these four lenses is revealing and insightful. A good read. A lasting contribution.

Faulty Foundation, but Excellent Conclusions!
By Anthony M. Faaborg
I would normally say that a book such as this should fail because of its faulty premises; however, Brookfield has managed to deliever an inspiring message in spite of the fact that his premises are, quite simply, wrong.

First, the good:

Brookfield offers 4 lenses for teachers to use as they become critically reflective about their own teaching practices: an autobiographical lens, the lens of colleagues, and of students, and of theory and research. Brookfield gives quite a bit of detail in both what these lenses mean and how to use them. Taken as a whole, the lenses offer a chance for true transformation, as teachers are exposed to the whole of themselves and how they can realize their goals (and dreams) by improving their practice. The book is no less than a handbook for excellence, offered in the form of 4 "tools" to achieve that excellence.

Now, the bad:

Brookfield never defines what "Critically Reflective" really means! He talks about it, and he describes what happens when one becomes critically reflective, but he never comes out and describes the central term that is the title of his book!

Brookfield also appears to be wholely focused on the notion that critical reflection involves finding out how power relationships manifest in the classroom. This miopic viewpoint becomes pedantic in the first chapters and does a dis-service to Brookfield's aim.

Finally, Brookfield totally misuses the terms "assumption" and "hegemony." According to Brookfield ssumptions are all about power, and hegemonies are ideas that are taken as true but are later found to be detrimental to learning efforts. These definitions are FAR from the definitions accepted in academe and even in real life; nevertheless Brookfield bases his argument for the need for critical reflection on these faulty premises.

HOWEVER, as I stated at the outset, in peculiar fashion he has still crafted a book that is useful and even transformative, for those who take the message to heart. Just don't use the terms in the first couple of chapters as Brookfield would advise you to use them!
