This book examines the archaeological implications of Islam as a force which can act upon all areas of life. Islam leaves distinctive material culture remains and distinctive categories of evidence which can be detected and described.

The subject and the geographical area of Islam is vast. The author provides an assessment of the means and the methods of uncovering Islamic material records in the context of a wide range of times and places. Separate chapters examine the mosque, the domestic environment, the Islamic city, death and burial, art, manufacturing and trade. The author draws evidence from the perceived heartlands of the Islamic world (Arabia, the Near East), and from those regions traditionally regarded as the periphery (Africa and the Far East). Coverage extends from the origins of Islam in the seventh century AD up until the present.

About the Author
Timothy Insoll is currently a Research Fellow in Archaeology at St John's College, Cambridge. From January 1999 he has been appointed a lecturer in Archaeology at the University of Manchester. He has conducted fieldwork in Mali, Eritrea, India, Uganda, Turkey and the UK. He has published numerous papers in academic journals, and one of his most recent publications, a monograph, is Islam, Archaeology and History: The Gao Region, Mali.

Demonstrates the variety of Muslim cultures

Can archeologists draw conclusions about whole societies? The discipline of social archeology says they can, and Insoll proves it in the case of Islam. His goal is not only to demonstrate the richness and variety of the material culture of Muslim societies-he refers to a satisfactorily wide range of times and places in doing so-but also to interpret material culture and connect it convincingly to social characteristics. Islam itself structures his book, each chapter begin-ning with an epigraph from the Qur'an that sets the theme. Thus the obligation of prayer is made archeologically concrete in the structure of the mosque, the importance of privacy shapes the excavatable spaces of domestic structures, and dietary requirements affect the food remains and the building types the archeologist may find.

Interesting 'social archeology' of Islamic history

Archeology of Islam

Timothy Insoll in eight chapters surveys studies of Islamic Archeology to ascertain what potential there is for learning more from existing and future digs and research.

Unlike the "faux Islam" of Orientalists who presume to generalize about an essence from mostly literature, linguistics, and classic studies, he looks at the material evidence of Mosques, domestic Environment, Death and Burial sites, Community Environment and spaces as well as material and spatial lessons about Muslim Life and `Art, Trade, and Ideas' to find variations on common themes, local adaptation, purposeful evolution and development. Space, time, change, local adaptation all have legitimate and important roles that make many generalities, however useful to simplify or sometimes demonize, seem terribly naïve.

There are interesting bits and observations for the student of Islamic history and cultures with observations about such things as how Hui Chinese gravestones in coastal China used both Arabic and Chinese perhaps to be Muslim without denying their Chinese place while in Java Arabic quite sufficed perhaps because Islam felt less threatened by a dominant civilization. The examples can be interesting; the speculations are designed to make one think and open directions for further study.

Examples are from the entire period of Islamic history and may be of interest to many students of Muslim Civilization.

Fantastic Addition to Volume 1

After years of skimming through issues of ImagineFX and other "digital painting and illustration" books, it is hard to find sources of information that will provide both original and thoughtful material. The reviews were strong for the first volume so I gave it a chance, and wow what an amazing book. Picking this volume up was a no brainer. These books are clearly geared for the entertainment designer, breaking sections into subjects like vehicles, matte paintings, character designs etc, but what this book does that others don't is provide extra little details that really help demonstrate how the artist achieved the final product. One complaint I have, as do many of my fellow friends at school, as well as other reviewers online, is that many digital painting help books skim over many crucial details and use generic blanketing statements that assume that the reader has a strong foundation in photoshop knowledge. Digital Painting Techniques, both volume 1 and 2 aren't completely guiltless here, but each artist does make a nice effort within there 4-5 page tutorial to either describe little details or show it. It is important that the reader look closely at the provided images to look at things like brush settings (opacity and flow) as well as blend mode, layer controls and brush type etc.

I don't subscribe to online magazine that this book is a reprint of because I love holding a book and being able to reference it when ever I want. This book doesn't just do Dragons, swords and spaceships that other less- than successful books do, it covers things like portrait painting, a little figure drawing and one of the most important sections- custom brushes.

At a discounted price of around $30, this is impossible to pass up, new learners might find some missing details that might frustrate, but read and read again, and it is important to get on Photoshop and play yourself to work out some key ideas to creating interesting art. Pick this one up along with Volume 1, because they don't repeat, this volume is a terrific continuation to what looks to be a very promising series

From the beginning of this book you are treated to some of the most mesmerising, elegant, intricate & down right beautiful artworks i've seen for some time. The first 4 sections of the book are split into characters, science fiction, fantasy and vehicles, these pages are crammed full of tips, tricks and tutorials aswell as stunning artworks. The remaining 4 sections are dedicated to full tutorials, split into speed painting, the use of custom brushes, painting from a 3D base mesh & finally complete projects.

But what you get here is so much more than just a set of pretty pictures on glossy pages.
You get techniques, expertise, suggestions and advice from the best artists in this field of digital imagery.

Throughout this book there's just about every style known to man created and then explained in great detail with step by step full colour images to accompany the easy to follow tutorials.

Great Digital Painting Book

After getting the first volume of the series, I've decided to buy the second volume and I can say it totally worth any single euro/penny/dollar. Like the previous volume, the book is a collection of Digital Painting Tutorials, organized in chapters with different themes; each tutorial is wrote by a different author. They are all professional digital artists and each one has his/her own style. This leads to a discontinuity of the tutorials style in the book, which is a strong feature of this series: since there's no a unique way of painting something, it is great to have different point of view. The working process of the tutorial is step-by-step with colorful images and final thoughts of the author. There are also bonus free content download like brushes!

Digital Painting Techniques 2 is great like Volume 1, if not better. You still need the basis of drawing and painting because it will not teach you how to old a pencil (or a brush) nor how to start using digital art software. It will explain you amazing techniques to achieve different effects in your painting, it introduces you to the vehicles and characters design and deepen many of their aspects under different lights. It expands your knowing of environments painting introducing the use of a 3D base to achieve complex structures and perspectives. And it deepen some of the themes of Volume 1 like Fantasy or Custom Brushes with new, stimulating tutorials and tips. If I could come back in time, I would buy it again.

One of the three most important books ever written on mixology

There's "Setting the Table" by Danny Meyer, to learn about being truly hospitable. There's "The Fine Art of Mixing Drinks" by David Embury, to learn about the theory and practise of mixology. And now there is "Bar Book" by Jeffrey Morgenthaler*.
I've trained about 60,000 bartenders in 60-odd (sometimes very odd) countries in the last 15 years. I've founded Europe's largest bar school as well as an award-winning craft cocktail bar, and if I could go back in time I would give Jeffrey's book to each and every student I've ever had. As it is, I will give it to every student I have from now on.
Jeffrey's research, insight and experience have resulted in a book that will shave years off the time needed to master drink making, leaving more time for professionals to concentrate on creativity and hospitality, and for interested Cocktailians** to concentrate on seducing your neighbours' wives (and husbands) at the excellent cocktail parties you will henceforth be able to effortlessly throw.

Excellent Reference for Home Bartenders

I recently set up a home bar and have been looking for guides that would show the ins and outs of preparing quality cocktails. There seem to be a lot of books out there with recipes, but none of them really get down to the fundamentals of technique. I have even looked into professional bar-tending classes, but they seem to inconvenient and I suspect they focus as much on customer issues and how to crank out the drinks. I typically only have one drink a night: I want it to be a good one!

This book truly delivers. It is beautiful with magnificent photos, it's the right size to sit on a bar shelf and, most importantly, it really gets down to the details of technique. A good example is the chapter on shaking...

About a week ago (before buying this book) I cracked the glass part of my Boston Shaker when trying to release it. It made me realize that I really had no idea how to deal with shaking a cocktail in general. Then along comes Morgenthaler's chapter on shaking. He starts by listing (in detail) the different shakers and how they can be used. He describes (in detail) the brands and qualities of the various shakers and what characteristics you should look for in each type (heavy gauge vs. light gauge steel for example). He then continues with how to grip the Boston Shaker (in detail - are you seeing a pattern yet?) and even how to practice shaking (he has his trainees use rice in the shaker).

In short, this is EXACTLY the sort of information I had been looking for. The book is all about the technique that creates a truly wonderful cocktail. Yes, it includes some great recipes (more can be found on the author's blog) and, yes, it has great pictures and the explanations are well written. But most of all it gets down to the details that you could probably only get if you had a pro working alongside you.
I suspect that there is a lot of great information in this book for even for professional bartenders, but it remains very accessible.

I can guarantee that the pages of my copy will soon be stained with various bitters, spirits and juices.

Mixing better looking, better tasting drinks

When Jeffrey Morgenthaler states that the difference between art and craft is the difference between creating something unique and recreating the same thing, flawlessly, over and over again, you begin to understand his approach to bartending. It's "aiming for the unattainable goal of pure perfection...[T]o those of us who enjoy that sort of thing, it's a Zen practice."

The three elements of cocktails are recipes, ingredients, and technique. This book is entirely about technique: making your drinks look better and taste better, and developing your flair for showmanship behind the bar. Not the Tom Cruise bottle-flipping, poetry-spouting kind of showmanship, but the proper ways of stirring, shaking, zesting, and juicing; of making, storing, and handling ice; making syrups and infusions, arranging garnishes. As you can imagine, this is a pretty daunting course of study, and I haven't even mentioned the section on measurements: speed pouring, free pouring, batching drinks for multiple guests, and -- gasp -- blind pouring exact measures.

Morgenthaler is such a lively, engaging writer that he makes this technical manual interesting even to casual cocktail enthusiasts; if you're planning on mixing drinks for a living, this book just became part of the syllabus.

Enjoyable book

First for the quality. I purchased the Kindle version of this book. Was very happy to see that it's actually the first 3 books combined - if you're familiar with the series, you'll be happy to know you only need to make 2 Kindle purchases instead of 6-7.
Standard Amazon Kindle quality book - text is crisp clear - not a scanned copy. No DRM at publisher's/Author's request.

The book itself is fun - a present day manufacturer/inventer/socialist... transported into the past by unknown (to him) means. Creates a new modern civilization. Has (fairly non-explicit) sex with 14-16 year old girls (which is nonetheless embarrassing when you loan your book to someone). Saves Poland from invading Mongols. A more modern "Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur's Court," except the Catholics are the good guys this time.

It's not a bad read, and for the price of $9.99 for 3 books, it's worth a try.

Lorena Kloosterboer is an internationally acclaimed Dutch-Argentine artist with a career of more than 25 years. Her award-winning artwork, mostly in the photorealist style, has been exhibited in galleries and museums in 10 countries, including the United States, and published in leading international art magazines, museum catalogs, and art books. Her paintings, drawings and sculptures reside in numerous collections around the world. She lives in Antwerp, Belgium.

Introduction

Beautiful art has always inspired me. Being infinitely curious, great paintings draw me closer to investigate brush strokes and colors and make me wonder about methods and techniques used. Well yes, I admit that I'm one of those inquisitive people who actually reads labels, instruction manuals and encyclopedias -- because I want to know everything!

Starting out as an oil painter when I was in my teens, I switched to using acrylics in 2004 and haven't looked back since. Of course, building a successful relationship with acrylics took time and energy, but just as with true friendship, my interest and devotion harvested fruits. I came to know and accept its little idiosyncrasies and weaknesses, as well as its strengths and pleasures. Acrylic paint has become a trusted and dearly beloved friend that still surprises me regularly.

I believe that each artist grows and develops along a very personal path, learning through observation, practice and especially by making mistakes. Looking at other artists' paintings and work methods is always useful in order to learn, gain insights and sometimes find solutions for our own artwork.

The suggestions and demonstrations in this book merely present a few possibilities of expression among numerous equally valid approaches. It is impossible to touch upon all artistic subject matter in these pages, let alone show all conceivable forms and methods of expressing them.

This book offers you practical guidelines and useful facts, but the tools and methods shown are mere suggestions -- certainly not rigid instructions. Apart from a few technical dos and dont's, as far as I'm concerned there are no rules in making art. I believe we all need to follow our hearts and intuition and dance to our own tune. Use whatever method you like to achieve the best end result; don't ever let any dogma dictate you!

Sometimes a simple sentence or image sparks an "aha" moment that stimulates you to create new artwork that suddenly propels you to reach a new level. I sincerely hope this book will inspire you to experiment, practice and find your own artistic voice, to ultimately become the very best artist that's inside of you.

Gorgeous Book on Painting with Acrylics

I am a weak (at best) artist and as time has permitted I have looked for resources to help me improve. I was excited when I had the opportunity to look at this book and it has exceeded my expectations - expectations that have been set by the many other books I have seen on the subject of painting. Most other books I have seen on the subject of painting have been little more than portfolios of others’ works, but this book goes into techniques, materials and more in a form that even the rank beginner can grasp.

First off I should say that this book is absolutely gorgeous. It is packed full of full-color photographs and illustrations, not just of completed or partial paintings but also charts, photographs of supplies and studios and so much more. Aside from being an instructional manual on painting with acrylic paint it makes a beautiful coffee table book.

The author goes into some explanation of what makes acrylic paint special and how to work with it. She provides a good comparative chart highlighting the differences between acrylic paint, oils and watercolors as well as a chart that shows a quick comparison/contrast between 9 different popular types of paint. She explains what to look for on paint labels, what additives and mediums are available and the advantages of each and more. From there she gives countless techniques on how to be successful with acrylic paint.

There are six main chapters in this book: “About Acrylics”, “Materials and Equipment”, “The Foundation”, “Acrylic Painting Techniques”, “Expressing Form and Surface” and finally “Be a Pro”. Each chaper is further broken down into smaller bite-sized chunks that may be as short as a page and highlight a specific concept or technique.

What I appreciate most about this book is that it covers even the most basic and simple concepts and does not make any assumptions about the skill or experience levels of the reader. Someone with no knowledge of acrylic paints can pick up this book and learn something. And, everything is presenting in terms that are not insulting or condescending to the beginner but not beneath the experienced artist either. The author did an excellent job of writing to her audience.

Painting in Acrylics is an excellent and gorgeous book on the subject of painting with acrylic paints. It is a book suited for beginners and seasoned artists as well and has a place with anyone wanting to know more about acrylic paints and improving their skills. It is so much more than a portfolio book (of which there is already an abundance) and is a superb choice if you want to work with acrylic paints.

A Masterful Art Instruction Book for the 21st Century

This is a splendid, detailed, intelligent, helpful, and beautiful book.

The book itself is both beautiful and practical: a sturdy, square-ish, hefty thing with a strong binding. You can prop it open to any page -- even get a little rough with it -- and you will do no damage. The quality of the illustrations here puts earlier painting instruction books to shame. The images here are clear, vibrant and expressive. They're loaded with texture. They teach you stuff.

However, the joys of this book are not merely those of layout or design -- this is a masterfully complete resource for working with acrylics. There are something like 50 "Technique Files" which show you in a very detailed fashion techniques you can use to produce certain effects. And the work here is highly acryllic-based, telling you what you should and shouldn't expect of this medium.

It is, actually, an indispensable guide.

My daughter, who took several art classes in college including an acrylics course, took an (incorrect) guess that this book retails at close to 100 dollars. This, because it is just that comprehensive: she and her younger siblings (we are an artsy household) were wowed over the scope of what is covered here: not just painting technique but as good a unit on color theory as I have ever seen (as a knitter and sometimes knitting teacher, I’ve seen a few), detailed instructions on creating your own art canvas, and supplies/organizational guidance for the home studio. For the professional, there is everything from how to sign and photograph your art to framing and shipping, and even advice on getting your artwork showed and noticed.

The author shows a marked preference for using realism and hyper-realism for her topic illustrations, a choice which reflects her own background as a celebrated artist in several media. Her credentials and experience enlighten but do not get in the way of the topics presented. That part, perhaps, should be a given, but _Paining in Acrylics_ takes a meticulous, scholarly approach, and too often scholarly books are also brag books for the academics who write them. (Well, I guess this is a brag book insofar as a considerable slice of her portfolio is reproduced on these pages, but they are there strictly to support explication of technique.)

As a person without too many artistic bones in the skeleton, I’m glad to have this reference for my younger children, who are now exploring various physical and digital media for their own art. These pages glow with pure love for and mastery of acrylic painting possibilities. There are images you will swear are photographic, and it’s not just educational, but magical – even after you’ve seen the “trick” deconstructed in a series of carefully explained panels.

Fun, but incomplete

A lot of fun. Quick reading, full of great art. But there are some puzzling things... and "Things" is one of them! No "THING" here! The other three members of the Fantastic Four are here, but of all of them The Thing has participated most in the Avengers... and he's the one missing.

And not to argue over "powers" like a school boy, but Hawkeye's fightng skills are listed at 7. That put's him in the Captain America, Wolverine, Shang Chi area. A better fighter than Iron Fist, Black Panther... and more. Really?

But again, a fun read. Good for new and old readers.

Incomplete Character Guide

I purchased this book for kicks being a Marvel comics fan and was let down by the fact that they left out some fairly popular villains. How could you forget Modok??? Seriously?
Aside from that, the book is in full color and pretty cool if you are curious about the Avengers, especially with the Avengers movie coming in 2012.

Not bad... but too graphic for kids

Quality of book - well-made, good binding, nice thick pages and glossy hard cover. Can stand wear and tear of younger child

Characters - good consolidation of Avenger's universe... nice quick info on each character (easy enough for a kid to read)

Content: Warning - not appropriate for young children - publishers chose some fairly revealing shots for the female characters... too detailed on the female anatomy and the angles at which they are portrayed. Could have toned down the breast sizes about 4 cups and covered up the cleavage/skin some more and it would have been a great book for a kid. I don't want my son looking at pictures like that in our house.

A Godsend!

I saw this book on television and decided to order it. I was struggling with some horrendous health problems and doctors were confused and unable to stop the pain. One medication, led to another, then another and they were still looking at adding more. Upon the books arrival, I immediately looked up my medications and there it was...the begnning of my relief. I began to immediately supplement what one medication had robbed from my body and even was able to get off the medication. I had been struggling with debilitating migraines and headaches for months and the relief was immediate. My pain levels went from a 10 to a 5 within days and are now down to 2's and 3's on a regular basis. I also began working with a doctor who specializes in "Integrated Medicine" and is more than willing to help me with the dosages of needed supplements, etc.

It is my hope to be completely pain free one day soon and this book gives me much needed information to help bring my body to a state of wholeness and healing.
Thank you for writing this book ~ it was a Godsend and an answer to prayer for me!!!

Good Basic Info.....

This is a very good book which I will refer to frequently. It covers a large amount of synthetic drugs and their possible interactions with supplements and nutrients in your system. Certain synthetic drugs will deplete these nutrients in the body, so sometimes you'll need to add more than the usual dosage.

I personally like the chapters on the Vitamins and trace minerals. The Selenium chapter is a good read although I would have added to this chapter that Selenium is important for conversion of T4 to T3. These are thyroid hormones needed for the proper functioning of your thyroid gland. All in all, it's a good purchase and I'd buy one for your parents or anyone else who needs an up to date look at drugs and vitamins.

Essential for prescription pill takers!

The idea for this book is excellent. Cutting down the number of drugs you take is the best idea, but minimising some of the harm of the drugs you do still take just makes sense.

The book starts off by explaining that synthetic chemicals cure nothing and can leave you sicker as they deplete nutrients or make certain nutrients unusable by the body.

There are sections on most of the B vitamins as well as some of the minerals and other vitamins. They were quite detailed and made for interesting reading. A bit of information was included about the best forms of each nutrient which was good, and some brand recommendations were given for each nutrient. More sections including all the B vitamins and the minerals would have made the book a lot better and more complete. The dosages given seemed reasonable for most things and weren't those silly and out of date `2 mg of thiamine' type ones you still get in some recent books.

Newer concepts like the need for activated folate if you have an MTHFR polymorphism were included but in some parts they could have been a bit clearer. The information about how to test for MTHFR seemed out of date as the test is not expensive anymore. Synthetic folic acid is also recommended throughout the book which is no good if you have MTHFR and considering that many have MTHFR issues and do not know it is not ideal. Some good information about the benefits of activated folate was included however, even if it was quite basic. (I just heard a great interview with the author and Dr Ben Lynch, so I assume this issue will be fixed in future books!)

Some sections were a bit unclear on the details. In the CoQ10 section the benefits of ubiquinol (reduced CoQ10) over ubiquinone (CoQ10) were mentioned but then the dosage recommendations given didn't specify which type was being discussed. Later on the author mentions that 50 mg ubiquinol is the equivalent of 100 mg of ubiquinone which is helpful, although the 2x figure is quite different to others I have read (e.g. between 3 and 4x by cardiologist Dr Sinatra.) But even knowing that it's still not clear which form was referred to in the given dosages.

The term folic acid is used interchangeably with 5-MTHF at times and this is incorrect. To say that vitamin C causes kidney stones is also incorrect. Tofu is listed as a source of vitamin B12 but actually B12 experts say that plant foods such as tofu in fact contain B12 analogues which do not give the body any of the B12 it needs and also block the absorption of B12 from other sources. They mimic B12 in some ways but the body can't use them as B12. These foods should actually be avoided if B12 is low.

There is a bit of vegetarian bias in the book which was disappointing. Soy is listed as a food that significantly lowers thyroid hormone levels yet the recommendation is not to avoid soy, but to just take more thyroid hormone. That's pretty bad advice. Soy is not a health food! (See `The Whole Soy Story' book.) Beta carotene is listed as far better and safer to take than preformed vitamin A form animal foods, despite the fact many of us convert beta carotene to vitamin A very poorly. Getting some real vitamin A in foods such as liver is not dangerous and is in fact an extremely healthy choice. Liver is the real superfood.

Agave nectar is mentioned as a safer sweetener (?) and grape seed oil is mentioned as an oil to cook with and protein powders are listed as healthy foods. The nutritional information in this book is not great and the book would have been better if it were all omitted as this seems to be not the authors speciality. Some outdated and wrong information is included.

Probably the worst part is when the author talks about how stupid and mad you'd have to be to eat a high fat diet and so get your arteries `all clogged up' dangerously. The author really needs to do some more recent reading on this topic and why the saturated fat = heart disease hypothesis is junk science. Plus on why low carb or ketogenic diets can be very healthy as well and are in no way `as bad for you' as low fat diets as the author claims. Books like Primal Body, Primal Mind and The Great Cholesterol Con and Know Your Fats and many others explain these facts well.

I most liked the bits of the book where the author talked about the more cutting edge information on the superiority of activated forms of B2, B6 and B12 as well as folate. I took lots of notes. Almost nobody discusses who needs the active forms of each nutrient and why. Few experts even recommend coenzymated vitamins - especially B2. But if you have low thyroid levels, poor digestion, low stomach acid or gut flora issues then taking your B2 in the activated form is actually a very good idea as you may convert the standard form to the active form very poorly. The Thorne products which contain activated forms of the B vitamins were listed too, which is great. More people need to know about those high quality products.

Some of the general information about why drugs wont cure you was also very good, as were the sections on why the RDI of nutrients has nothing to do with the optimum level for each person, how much nutrient needs vary per person and stage of life, and why what is important is the optimum level of a nutrient - not merely the RDI. The RDIs for most nutrients are ridiculously low.

Overall this book is an essential read for anyone taking prescription medications. Hopefully it will help people cut down on drugs a lot and also make it safer to take those few that may remain. The information is not quite comprehensive enough to be a sole source of information about supplements and nutrients but it's a very good start. Recommended reading for anyone taking prescription or OTC drugs daily. 3.5 stars.
