Gunslinger: The Remarkable, Improbable, Iconic Life of Brett Favre, by Jeff Pearlman

From a New York Times best-selling author, the full, definitive biography of Brett Favre

A towering figure on the field for two decades who breezed into the Hall of Fame, Brett Favre was one of the game’s last cowboys, a fastball-throwing, tobacco-chewing gunslinger who refused to give up without a fight. This peerless quarterback guided the Green Bay Packers to two Super Bowls and one championship win, shattering countless NFL records along the way.

Gunslinger tells Brett Favre’s story for the first time, drawing on more than five hundred interviews, including many from the people closest to Favre. Jeff Pearlman charts an unparalleled journey from his rough rural childhood and lackluster high school football career to landing the last scholarship at Southern Mississippi to a car accident that nearly took his life. Favre clawed back, getting drafted into the NFL by the Atlanta Falcons, then finding his way to Green Bay, where he restored the Packers to greatness and inspired a fan base as passionate as any in the game. Yet he struggled with demons: addiction, infidelity, the loss of his father, and a fraught, painfully prolonged exit from the game he loved, a game he couldn’t bear to leave.

Grand, gritty, and revelatory, Gunslinger is a big sports biography of the highest order, a fascinating portrait of the man with the rocket arm whose life has been one of triumph, of fame, of tragedy, of embarrassment, and—ultimately—of redemption.

Review
“Jeff Pearlman writing about Brett Favre is a perfect match of author and subject, making Gunslinger as rollicking and raucous and joyous as Favre was improvising at Lambeau Field.”
–David Maraniss, author of When Pride Still Mattered and Once in a Great City

“Over two decades, Brett Favre was as compelling a figure as any in the National Football League. He alone was 'Must-See TV.' In Gunslinger, Jeff Pearlman provides an extraordinary look at every facet of the life of a man who performed on sport's grandest stage and who had one helluva time along the way.”
–Al Michaels

"Jeff Pearlman's deeply reported book is an unprecedented picture of an unprecedented athlete. Brett Favre emerges as at once incorrigibly childish and a magnetic leader of men. Perhaps never in sports history has a star so big inhabited a market so small. Gunslinger leaves an impression of Favre that is neither simply good nor bad, but rather something nearly non-existent in sportswriting today: a full portrait of a human being."
–David Epstein, author of The Sports Gene

"Here's a story as iconic as 'The Gunslinger' himself, Brett Favre. Like Favre, Jeff Pearlman goes deep–and scores."
–Adam Schefter, author of Romo: My Life on the Edge and Think Like A Champion

"This is the deepest understanding we are likely to have of Favre for quite some time... Pearlman's book is a complete, satisfying biography of a gunslinger who, for both better and worse, was far more complex than most fans have understood." --Kirkus Reviews

"Presenting Favre as a congenial, larger-than-life character, a 'gunslinger,' who was fun to watch on the field and hard to root against, Pearlman proves to be a good match for his subject and creates a compelling work." -- Library Journal, starred review

"A wealth of NFL-insider anecdotes sure to enthrall fans. Rarely does a straightforward sports bio ascend mainstream best-seller lists, but this could be the exception. Clear a spot: Gunslinger is coming." -- Booklist

“Skilled sports biographer Pearlman brings his dogged, one-more-phone-call approach to this massively enjoyable book on Brett Favre, the gambling, cannon-armed quarterback whose talent and boyish enthusiasm brought the Green Bay Packers back to hallowed relevance in the mid-1990s.”
-- Publishers Weekly

"What does 'Gunslinger' offer the Wisconsinite who has read a gazillion words about Favre over the past decades? A perspective outside the Packerland bubble, for one. He also delivers detailed reporting on aspects of Favre's life that we tend to dismiss in a line of background . . . Compelling."
-- Jim Higgins, Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel

"Terrific . . . It’s not only a page-turner, but it’s built on a foundation of solid journalism by an author who has a background as a newspaper reporter . . . Many [stories] are new and draw back the curtain on Favre’s life in a way that hadn’t been done."
-- Gary D'Amato, Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel

"The compelling, complete story of his legend, and his faults."
-- Chicago Tribune

"A must-read . . . Well-researched and entertaining."
-- AOL.com

... reading Gunslinger and I thought it was a very good read. Not great
By imnion
I just finished reading Gunslinger and I thought it was a very good read. Not great, but very good.

I’ve been a die-hard Packers fan for my entire life even though I reside in Iowa now. One of the things that I took away from the book is that the author is not one of the die-hards. (Not a bad thing at all) Anyway I just wanted to mention a few of the things about the Favre years that could have been mentioned in the book:

- Until he left Green Bay he was very well respected by most players from opposing teams. They didn’t want to injure him. EXCEPT John Randall and Chris Hovan from the Vikings.
- The Michael Strahan sack record could have been researched a little.
- My feeling, along with a good percentage of die-hards is Favre was maybe a little better than average in the 2000’s. He would screw up big games with bonehead throws and never really get called out on it. Especially playoff games. Season over. He was gone. I don’t really dig Teddy Thompson but I thought he did the right thing in standing up to Favre for once. I wasn’t sorry to see him go. And, as I predicted in his good Minnesota season, he’ll screw it up somehow and he did.
- There was a story, when Favre was with the Jets, that he called an opposing team, maybe the Lions or Colts that he would give them any info on the Packers plays that they wanted just to be vindictive.
- Then maybe get into some of the bigger games he played in over the years. Us die-hards remember them. It would have been interesting to hear some insight into a few more of those contests.

I could go on but I won’t.

The things I didn’t know were the page turners for me:

- How badly he treated Deanna.
- How is dad was revered, but really he was kind of a dick.
- How wonderful his mother was.
- For that matter, how wonderful Deanna was (is)
- How he did go out of his way for some good things. The penny story. The sick child. Very heartwarming.
- How the author covered the retire/not retire thing. It was mostly self promotion. I always suspected that.
- The Rodgers story. I didn’t know a lot of those things.
- The disrespect for Childress. I didn’t know it was that bad.
- How he thought it was cool to break fingers of the pass receivers. WTH? Ugh.

A must-read for any NFL fan
By Damien Lehfeldt
Akira Kurosawa’s masterpiece film Rashomon tells the story of four people who pay witness to the same crime—the murder of a Samurai. Rashomon’s story is told via trial, with testimonies provided by a priest, a woodcutter, a bandit, and the samurai’s wife. Each witness provides his/her account of the crime, giving drastically different but equally conceivable accounts of how the Samurai’s life ended. Rashomon is not so much a “whodunit” film, rather, a poignant study of the incongruences of the lenses through which we bear witness to events in our lives.

Pearlman's biography Gunslinger is the Rashomon of Favre's life, a deep character study from teammates, coaches, family members, and even Favre himself in a journey that began in the quaint town of Gulfport, Mississippi and ended in Canton. The memory of Favre ranges from joyful to lukewarm to spiteful, each interview weaving a narrative that gives life to Favre unlike anything we've ever seen.

When Brett Favre's Hall of Fame deliberations began earlier this year, it was reported that the Hall voters needed all of six seconds to confirm the Green Bay legend.

Few players exhibited a joie de vivre on the field like Favre did, and in an era where fun seems to be diminishing, Favre remains a beacon for what it means to love the game of football.

I had previously read Pearlman's Sweetness, a biography of Walter Payton, which is another great read, so when I saw that Pearlman was to study Favre, I was delighted over the prospect of it. Sports biographies, (particularly ghost written autobiographies) tend to follow a common trope: the discovery of the game, the rise, the fall (or some kind of extreme adversity) and the redemption. What Pearlman does phenomenally with Gunslinger is examine the complicated world of Brett Favre with care, honesty, and objectivity unlike anything I've seen in a biography.

Drawing from over 500+ interview sources, Pearlman weaves a narrative beginning with Favre's early years in Gulfport, Mississippi, his unique relationship with his siblings and parents (hint: he was mean, according to sister Brandi, sometimes hitting them with wooden boards and other household objects), and how he went from a run-first offense with his father to a star QB at Southern Mississippi University.

A common and recurring theme of sports or musical prodigies is their complicated and often abusive relationship with the patriarch of the family. Brian Wilson of the Beach Boys wrote of being ordered to defecate on a newspaper in front of his family at the order of his father, also subjected to habitual beatings. In his autobiography Open, Andre Agassi wrote of how his father would often us him as a tool for bets as a child and the violence his father would impose upon Agassi and others.

In Gunslinger, The evolution of Favre's relationship with his father Irv is engaging. Despite being beaten on the regular, verbally chastised, and leveraging Brett's stardom for personal gain (and as Pearlman notes, never really told he was loved), Favre's admiration for his father was unwavering, and if "the apple doesn't fall far from the tree," Pearlman draws behavioral parallels between father and son that breathe life into why Favre often struggled with addiction, and his often complicated relationship with women.

In the pre-Social Media days, it's interesting to think how Favre would have been perceived in today's NFL in which social media has often led to a player's downfall in the demons it can bring to light (see Manziel, Johnny). Favre's ascent to stardom ran concurrently with his troubles with alcohol and painkillers, yet often hidden from the public eye and further protected by the Hattiesburg and Green Bay media. Whether it was his near death DUI accident in college that required the removal of 30 inches of his intestines (the subsequent and recurring narrative of how it created rancid farts he unleashed on his teammates is hilarious), his addiction and recovery from painkillers, and finally, his redemption from alcoholism are fascinating reads, and studies in how addiction impacts those close to you and tests the limits of loyalty.

As Pearlman mentions throughout the book, Favre's wife Deanna was the true protagonist of the Favre narrative, supporting him through each addiction, numerous tragedies, and even serial infidelity. Without Deanna, it is arguable Favre's journey into both the NFL and perhaps life itself would have ended fast, and Pearlman describes her faithfulness to the flawed Favre in great detail and care.

Gunslinger has a little something for everyone. For the X's and O's enthusiasts out there, it provides in-depth into how his coaches struggled to plan around his "f*** it and chuck it" mentality, and how defensive coordinators schemed against him into making 336 career interceptions, while also exploring how he would continuously reinvent himself and his approach to football.

Despite being far from a saint, Favre exhibited great care and empathy for younger fans, particularly those afflicted by illness. Pearlman tells the heartbreaking story of a young Vikings fan named Anderson with an inoperable brain tumor who idolized Favre. Favre visited the young fan, spending three hours with him. Anderson regularly drew pictures of his hero, and the tumor would make him draw his "4's" backwards. Favre, in honor of Anderson regularly donned a towel with a backwards 4 scribbled on it. These stories of Favre's compassion are frequently mentioned in Gunslinger and paint the picture of a man, who despite his public persona, privately and quietly desired to do good for his greatest admirers in children.

Upon closing the book, I felt as if Gunslinger opened me up to the complicated Favre as if I had known him my whole life. Just as Pearlman triumphed in breathing life into the story of Walter Payton in Sweetness, Pearlman succeeded once again in bringing us along the odyssey of Brett Favre. Even for football fans outside of Green Bay (and Minnesota [inset Vikings legend Brett Favre joke here]), Gunslinger is a must-read for the NFL junkies out there.

This was my least favorite of them all
By Ric Franco
I've read all of Jeff Pearlman's books and always look forward to them every few years. This was my least favorite of them all. Mr Pearlman tries to inject humor more than usual, and at one point in the book, took the reader into Brett Favre's thoughts. Still very interesting, I thought that the author put too much of his personality into this one.

Review

A captivating and authoritative book, Political Ideologieswill intrigue students about fundamental political ideas, both answering their questions and inciting further ones. Baradat is interested both in the reigning ideals of modern times and in how these are involved in the non-ideal realities of the world, giving us searching and even-handed examinations of the major political attitudes and thought systems of our time. Adequate at best; but has serious flaws
By Gregory J. Casteel
Note that this review is for the 11th edition (2011). I have not looked at any of the previous editions and, therefore, cannot comment on them. However, judging from what the preface says about what is new to this edition, much of what I have to say here will likely apply to other editions as well.

I started reading this book with high hopes. I was looking for a text that provided a good overview of the various ideological positions that people hold, both in the United States and around the world, discussing the basic tenets and goals of each ideology, its history and major figures, its preferred methods for achieving its political objectives (e.g. top-down reform, grassroots activism, violent revolution, terrorism, separatism), its political organization (e.g. into parties, interest groups, movements, etc.), and what distinguishes it from other political viewpoints. As a bonus, I would really have liked some discussion of why people hold different ideological views: why some people are drawn to socialism, others to liberalism, others to fascism, etc. But a good overview of the world's many ideologies would have sufficed, even without an exploration of the motivations that drive people into one ideological camp or another. Although I haven't (thus far) taught any courses specifically on ideology, I do discuss ideology in some of my other political science courses; and, so, I was looking for a text I could recommend to my students, and that I could draw on when preparing lectures on the subject. I was hoping that this would be the text I was looking for. Unfortunately, it isn't.

Like I said, I started reading this book with high hopes. As I thumbed through it before I began reading, it looked as if it would be just what I was wanting. It had chapters on the spectrum of political attitudes, on nationalism, on liberalism (including a discussion of conservatism), on anarchism, on socialism, on fascism and Nazism, on ideologies in the developing world (including Islamism), and even a chapter on feminism and environmentalism. And there is some good information to be found in these chapters. The author does a pretty good job of briefly summarizing the history of each of these ideologies, identifying the most important foundational figures in each, and describing the political and economic views represented by each ideology. But, unfortunately, I found that the book failed to live up to my high hopes for a number of different reasons.

Without going into too much detail, let me briefly list what I believe to be the major shortcomings of this book (in no particular order):

* It's a bit too superficial in its coverage of the various ideologies. While it does provide some good, basic information, it only scratches the surface. Wikipedia goes into more depth about some of the topics covered in this book. This level of detail may be suitable for high school students; but not for university undergrads.

* The text covers only the major global ideologies and their most prominent variants. It does not even attempt to discuss the multitude of minor variants and offshoots of each of these ideologies.

* The author doesn't stick to the subject. There are lengthy digressions about topics that are only tangentially related to ideology, such as the structural differences between the American and the British systems of government, the problem of population growth in the developing world, and recent political changes in China and Cuba (which appear to be motivated by pragmatic concerns rather than by ideology, per se).

* The author tries too hard to keep up with current events. If this were a textbook on contemporary political issues, timeliness would be of the essence. But it's not. It's a textbook on ideologies - a subject that calls for a certain measure of perspective. In order to understand what a particular political movement stands for, you have to give it time to develop; and you have to step back and look at it from some distance. If you're too close to something, your view of it becomes distorted: relatively minor features loom large in your field of view, while major features can blend into the background. While I can sympathize with the author's desire to discuss, for example, the ideology behind the Tea Party movement, it's simply too early to judge what it's all about, apart from an expression of frustration at the direction the country has taken over the past few years. It would have been better not to mention the Tea Party at all than to try to encapsulate its essence in just a few sentences scattered throughout the text. Likewise, it would have been better not to mention the "Great Recession" at all than to simply bring it up in passing just to note that it's too early to tell what its long-term ideological impact will be. I got the distinct impression that the author included these (and other) passing references to current events just to give him an excuse to put out a new edition of his textbook.

* There is very little discussion of Islamism. Although Islamism may not be in the same league with major global ideologies such as liberalism and socialism, it is an important ideology, nonetheless, and deserves more coverage than the (approximately) three pages it gets in this text.

* The author adopts the overly-simplistic, one-dimensional political spectrum, which places radicals and liberals on the "left" and conservatives and reactionaries on the "right", based solely on their attitudes toward change. While I would expect any text on ideology to discuss this traditional view of the political spectrum, I would hope that it would be challenged as inadequate, and that alternative political typologies would be explored. This text simply embraces the traditional view and doesn't bother to explore any alternatives.

* The text is riddled with glaring spelling, grammatical, and stylistic errors. This might be excusable in a first edition; but these errors should have been caught and corrected by the 11th edition.

* The author is just too opinionated for a textbook -- especially a textbook whose purpose is to discuss how political views can differ. He doesn't shy away from using value-laden terms when describing various ideologies and individuals (at one point even referring to a couple of popular pundits as "gasbags"); and he frequently asserts things as fact that are still the subject of intense political debate. While I suspect that I would agree with many of the author's political views, I feel that an educator's job is to teach, not to preach, and that a textbook ought to inform rather than opine. By asserting one's own political viewpoints in the classroom, a teacher (or textbook writer) risks alienating students who disagree with those viewpoints; and, once you've alienated a student, he or she will stubbornly reject everything you have to say from that point on. If you want to teach, you need to stick to the facts, and leave the op ed for your blog.

These aren't the only complaints I have with this textbook; but my other complaints are relatively minor compared to these. I don't want to leave the impression that this book is worthless. Like I said above, there is some good information here. Some students might benefit from it, especially if all they wanted was a very simple, cursory overview of the major ideologies of the world. But it's simply not what I was hoping it would be when I bought it; and I would not use it if I were teaching a course on ideology, or recommend it to any of my colleagues or students.

-----

EDITED (FALL 2012) TO ADD: If you're looking for another ideology textbook to use instead of this one by Baradat, I would have to recommend Andrew Heywood's "Political Ideologies: An Introduction" 5th edition (2012), which I've also reviewed for Amazon. It's not perfect; but it's the best ideology textbook I've come across thus far.

An excellent tool for all those interested in politics
By J. Bruce
I actually had the pleasure of taking his political science course at the local college, and was amazed about how interesting he made the material, so I picked up his book. It is amazing compared to what we were forced to use in class! There are so many myths floating around thanks to our "wonderful" media, who say we're getting fair information when they're really just owned by a giant corporation and have to push their views. I sold back the course textbook and bought this instead, and read this over and over since it relates so well to our times. Since it is a textbook, there isn't the "fluff" associated with some other political books (hello Mr. Franken) and it actually educates the reader, not just talking at him/her. I recommend this for all poly sci students regardless of level, and I only hope I have the opportunity to take another of his classes.

Still the must-have book for anyone who votes
By Joe
This has to be the one college textbook (the 7th edition, really) that I read over and over again. The logic in how Baradat approaches the origin of political thought and brings it into the present balances itself with an easy-to-read engaging prose. It gives a survey of the great thinkers all over the spectrum, including anarchists, conservatives, liberals, radicals, communists, socialists, and fascists.
In today's society, I have found that most people are misinformed about the meaning of conservatism and liberalism because they get their concepts through the media. This book aggressively dispels all the myths fabricated by the AM radio conservatives and the politically-correct totalitarians.

The only book dedicated to the transition from On Prem to Cloud that I am aware of
By Amazon Customer
Full disclosure I provided some PowerShell for the book but until I bought it I had never seen any of the other content. Really impressed with what is provided. To my knowledge there isn't another book that attempts to address the transition to the cloud like this does. As an example, if you are on premises SharePoint technologist there will be big changes in how you use PowerShell.

Rescuing Da Vinci: Hitler and the Nazis Stole Europe's Great Art - America and Her Allies Recovered It, by Robert M. Edsel

From the #1 New York Times bestselling author of The Monuments Men, which is now a major motion picture directed by and starring George Clooney, Rescuing Da Vinci uses 460 photographs to tell the story of the Monuments Men.

The Monuments Men were a group of 345 or so men and women from thirteen nations who comprised the Monuments, Fine Arts, and Archives section during World War II. Many were museum directors, curators, art historians and educators. Together they worked to protect monuments and other cultural treasures from the destruction of World War II. In the last year of the war, they tracked, located, and ultimately returned more than 5 million artistic and cultural items stolen by Hitler and the Nazis. Their role in preserving cultural treasures was without precedent.

Review
From The Wall Street Journal, Dec 15, 2006: "Mr. Edsel has collected hundreds of photographs documenting the extent of the Nazis' looting and the Allies' efforts to protect or rescue art treasures. We see Goering's private museum of stolen masterpieces, American soldiers recovering Leonardo's "Lady With an Ermine" and Rembrandt's rolled-up "Night Watch" being transported across Holland to safety. Particularly memorable is a photograph of the massive "Winged Victory" sculpture in the Louvre being lowered down the museum steps with ropes and pulleys before to its evacuation in advance of the Nazi invasion. One shudders with gratitude -- for the fact that the piece survived the war and for a book that reminds us of what is at stake when the enemies of civilization seize power." --From The Wall Street Journal, Dec 15, 2006:

It gathers together, for the first time, nearly 500 photos documenting the Nazi theft of tens of thousands of artworks from European museums and private collections. And it details the immense, painstaking, though little-recognized, efforts of Allied armies to recover and return these precious items." --From The Chicago Tribune, Dec 3, 2006:

Titles aren't everything.
By C. Rawson-Tetley
You could be forgiven for dismissing this book, if you only went by titles, as just another book that is cashing in on the Da Vinci myth in concert with a patriotic nostalgia for the Second World War as a time of moral absolutes. You would be wrong. The photographs are superb, many published for the first time, and the accompanying text is precise, jargon free and direct. Robert Edsel may, as he says, be obsessed with the subject but his approach is measured and clear. I am an English fine art academic and heard of this book via a small article in an English newspaper and was sufficiently intrigued to order the book from Amazon in the US (it is not available in Great Britain). I have recommended it to many of my friends (not something to do lightly) as it compliments and extends, visually, much of the existing literature on the subject of art theft.

Priceless!
By Paula
It's hard to imagine why this EXTRAORDINARY story about EXTRAORDINARY men (and women) is just now being revealed to a mass audience. As a civilization, we owe the salvation of our culture to the efforts of the heroes in "Rescuing Da Vinci." HATS OFF TOO to Mr. Edsel for his vision of putting forth the greatest "untold" story of WWII in a brilliantly assembled book. It is the PERFECT gift for members of the "Greatest Generation," art collectors, war buffs, museum buffs or any thinker. The breathtaking pictures make it a superb gift for photographers, designers, architects and the like. Plus, I've discovered it's a wonderful "conversation piece" for my coffee table!

By Christian Schlect
An effective pictorial survey of the cultural crimes waged by Germany during World War II.

That much plundered European art was found, protected and returned to rightful owners by the U.S. military in these difficult days is a bright star in our nation's history. Mr. Edsel has delivered a fitting tribute to the many U.S. and British art experts, and others, who volunteered to do what was possible to make aright the unpardonable cultural crimes committed by the Nazis.

Introduction Introduction

It’s often said that the most important thing you can do for your children is to love them. Well, yes, of course it is. I’m taking it as obvious that you love your kids, and you don’t need any book to help you do that. But, whatever anyone says, love is not enough. So, what else really matters?

We do a million and one things for our children, from teaching them to walk, through checking to ensure they have clean socks, to making sure they know how to stay safe, and we listen to them tell us for the fifth time how they scored the winning goal in their playground game of basketball or football.

No parent has time to do everything (and nor would it be good for our kids if we did). That’s even truer if you have more than one child, or a demanding job, or are on your own. So how do you decide what you absolutely must do and what you can let go? Unless you want to live in a permanent state of guilt, angst, or trepidation, spending some time thinking about what things will make the biggest difference to your child and what you can afford to let ride really makes sense.

Let’s think about what you’re aiming for. You want your kids to enjoy their childhoods, and you want them to grow into healthy, confident, successful adults who will be happy and will make those around them happy, too. Recognizing that goal starts to focus your mind—but how do you narrow it down further to the “must do” priorities? How do you know what’s really, really important?

I’ve spent many years watching lots of children grow up, with great fascination. Not to mention my own—I have three children, and three stepchildren whose lives I became involved with in their early teens. This deep fascination with what parents do and the effect these actions have on their children has also led me to ask many adults about their own childhoods. When I pulled all this information together, the picture that emerged clearly indicated that parental input makes the most difference.

I’ve narrowed down the real essentials to 10 broad principles. These are the things that you need to get right in order to set your children up for the best possible life. You can get them right in your own way, of course—we’re all different. Occasionally, I should warn you, you’ll get them wrong. We all do that. You’ll realize you got it wrong and you’ll make amends, so that will be okay, too. After all, your children don’t need perfect parents (how excruciating would that be?).

Your children need parents who put them first. I’m guessing that you put your children above yourself in your priority list. That’s good; that’s one similarity I’ve noticed among all the best parents I know.

There’s a lot of very important stuff in this book that will make a big difference to your children—but don’t panic. I bet you’re doing a lot of it already, and the fact that you’re reading this book shows you take your job as a parent seriously, which is a big plus. Assuming you’re human, however, there are bound to be some important things that you haven’t thought through.

We tend to have certain principles we feel are important (often having to do with what influenced our own childhoods) and others that we don’t really think about. This book can help you spot the gaps so that you can give attention to the most important things you could be doing for your children.

Doing some of these things may be hard work; some of them will come naturally. Irritatingly, some of the pieces you find difficult will come naturally to your partner, but that works both ways. On the plus side, however, working on the difficult pieces will help you realize just how much of what you do for your children isn’t so important. Best of all, after you have these 10 bases covered, you can stop stressing about the rest, and get on with being a great parent and enjoying your child.

Amazon.com Review
In 2005, Joel Greenblatt published a book that is already considered one of the classics of finance literature. In The Little Book that Beats the Market—a New York Times bestseller with 300,000 copies in print—Greenblatt explained how investors can outperform the popular market averages by simply and systematically applying a formula that seeks out good businesses when they are available at bargain prices. Now, with a new Introduction and Afterword for 2010, The Little Book that Still Beats the Market updates and expands upon the research findings from the original book. Included are data and analysis covering the recent financial crisis and model performance through the end of 2009. In a straightforward and accessible style, the book explores the basic principles of successful stock market investing and then reveals the author’s time-tested formula that makes buying above average companies at below average prices automatic. Though the formula has been extensively tested and is a breakthrough in the academic and professional world, Greenblatt explains it using 6th grade math, plain language and humor. He shows how to use his method to beat both the market and professional managers by a wide margin. You’ll also learn why success eludes almost all individual and professional investors, and why the formula will continue to work even after everyone “knows” it.

While the formula may be simple, understanding why the formula works is the true key to success for investors. The book will take readers on a step-by-step journey so that they can learn the principles of value investing in a way that will provide them with a long term strategy that they can understand and stick with through both good and bad periods for the stock market.

As the Wall Street Journal stated about the original edition, “Mr. Greenblatt…says his goal was to provide advice that, while sophisticated, could be understood and followed by his five children, ages 6 to 15. They are in luck. His ‘Little Book’ is one of the best, clearest guides to value investing out there.”

An Exclusive Q&A with Author Joel Greenblatt It's been five years since you first published The Little Book That Beats the Market. Have your thoughts changed at all about the effectiveness of value investing?

In my mind, the principles of value investing have not changed. As we've learned yet again, markets can be volatile and emotional. They often go to extremes of pessimism and optimism, and prices can and often do fluctuate wildly and significantly over short periods of time. As a result, Mr. Market can provide some excellent opportunities to purchase bargain priced stocks when people are unduly pessimistic. This is where value investing comes in. Buying companies below their true value is the road to being a successful investor. The magic formula found in the Little Book seeks to buy a group of above average companies but only when they are available at below average prices. Because it is a formula, it seeks to do this in an unemotional way that can take advantage of the market's mood swings. Ben Graham taught us these lessons in the 1930s and the principles still hold as well today as when he first wrote them down more than 70 years ago.

Do you think individual investors should re-think their investment strategy as a result of the recent market crash and recession?

I think the best lesson that can be learned from the recent price drop and partial recovery is that stocks are volatile. For most people, stocks should represent a portion of their investment portfolio because I still believe that over the long term they will provide superior returns relative to most alternative investments. However, whether that portion of an investment portfolio devoted to stock investments should be 40% of an investor's portfolio or 80% is a very individual decision. How much are you willing (or able) to lose before you panic out? There's no sense investing such a large portion of your assets in a long-term strategy if you can't take the pain when your chosen strategy doesn't work out for a period of years. The "magic formula" found in the book can underperform the market for years. It can also lose money if the market goes down. But it is also a strategy that makes a lot of sense and that should work well for investors over the long term.

Can you explain the Magic Formula's basic strategy in one sentence?

The Magic Formula strategy is a long-term investment strategy designed to help investors buy a group of above-average companies but only when they are available at below-average prices.

You make reference in the new afterword to receiving a number of emails from readers after the The Little Book That Beats the Market was published. Could you share with us some of the comments you received?

I received many emails after the first edition of the book was published. Some suggested that the strategy was working great for them while others reported that they had waited over a year and the strategy was underperforming. These results and emails are consistent with the message of the book. Over the five years since the book was published, the strategy earned very nice returns for investors, but the ride was bumpy. Not only did the formula underperform for a period of time, in 2008 it lost money along with the market. Overall, the formula performed quite well but only for those who maintained a true long-term perspective. This is easier said than done. In the new afterword, I try to give more facts, color and information about the strategy that I hope will help investors be successful in taking full advantage of the magic formula over the long term. Of course, I also got plenty of emails where investors just asked us to do it all for them. Other emails asked us to apply the formula internationally. As a result, we have worked on both of these projects over the last several years.

In the new afterword, you write "Beating the market isn't the same thing as making money." Can you elaborate on this and why it's a difficult concept to swallow at times?

Since the strategy involves buying a portfolio that is 100% long the stock market, if the stock market goes down, our portfolio may well go down, too. If the market drops 40% and we beat the market by losing only 38%, this is small consolation. As I say in the afterword, while I firmly believe that for most people an investment in the stock market should represent a substantial portion of your investment portfolio, how big that portion should be can vary widely. For some it can be well over half of assets, for others well less than half might be appropriate. The magic formula strategy is a wonderful strategy for that portion of your portfolio that you choose to invest in the stock market. In fact, I truly believe that the magic formula remains one of your best options. How much to invest in the stock market, however, is a very personal decision that should be partially based on your ability to withstand short-term negative price movements. One encouraging fact, though, discussed in the afterword is the performance of our large cap portfolio over the last decade. Over that period, the market as measured by the S&P 500 was actually down, yet our backtests showed that following the formula over those same ten years would have resulted in a more than tripling of your money. Unfortunately, those great long-term returns came with plenty of bumps, including some not so short periods of losses and underperformance. But once again, if the formula worked every day, every month and every year, everyone would follow it and it would be ruined. Fortunately, it's not so great, and as a result I strongly believe that long-term investors should continue to benefit from the magic formula for many years to come.

From Publishers Weekly
Contrary to efficient-market naysayers, this engaging investment primer contends that ordinary stock-market investors can indeed get better-than-market returns over the long haul. Greenblatt (You Can Be a Stock Market Genius), a Columbia Business School adjunct professor, touts a "value-oriented" approach that looks for bargain stocks whose share price is cheap relative to the company's profitability. His version is a "magic formula" that ranks stocks on the basis of two variables—the earnings yield and the business's return on capital. His Web site, magicformulainvesting.com, virtually automates the procedure for novices. Greenblatt offers lots of statistical proof of the formula's success, but emphasizes the importance of faith in seeing the investor through inevitable short-term downturns: "It will be your belief in the overwhelming logic of the magic formula that will make the formula work for you in the long run." He conveys his ideas through a lucid if rudimentary and rather corny explanation of basic investment concepts about risk, return, interest and business valuation. Although the fabulous returns he touts seem too good to be true, Greenblatt's formula is a reasonable variant of mainstream value-investing methods. Investors seeking a little more hands-on excitement than the average mutual fund offers won't go too far wrong following his advice. (Jan.)

Review
"...a sharply written, anecdote-rich, easy to understand investing strategy". (Wall Street Journal, August 7, 2006)

"...a rare worthy edition to humanity's investing know-how". (SmartMoney, May 5, 2006)

There's certainly no dearth of advice on investment. The best-seller lists are full of books on how to be a successful investor "in only 15 minutes a week", on how to become an "automatic" millionaire, and about how to invest if you're "young, fabulous and broke".
The best book on the subject in years is value investor Joel Greenblatt's The Little Book That Beats the Market, which is still a top seller months after its release. Beyond the credibility that comes from someone whose private investment partnership, Gotham Capital, has produced 40 per cent a year returns over the past 20 years, Mr Greenblatt brings an elegant and simple writing style to what can be a complicated subject.
He outlines a "magic formula", based on how he invests, that anyone can use. The formula has only two inputs, a company's earnings yield and its return on capital. The rationale is straightforward: buy shares in good businesses, measured by returns on capital, only when they're available at bargain prices, defined as a high earnings yield.
The magic formula looks for companies that have the best combination of earnings yield and return on capital, with each input weighed equally. An outstanding company with an expensive stock ranked, say, first for return on capital but 1,999th on earnings yield, would have the same combined ranking of 2,000 as a low return on capital company within expensively priced shares, ranking 1,999th in return on capital but first on earnings yield.
Using this approach to create a regularly updated portfolio of about 30 stocks with the highest combined rankings, Mr Greenblatt tested his formula between 1988 and 2004. The results were remarkable: with only one down year, the magic portfolio would have returned 30.8 per cent a year, against a 12.4 percent annual return for the S&P 500.
Rather than using the latest 12 months' earnings to calculate earnings yield and return on capital, Mr Greenblatt and his analysts try to improve on the rote application of this formula by using earnings estimates in a "normal" year, one in which nothing unusual is happening within the  company, its industry or the overall economy.
Mr Greenblatt has created a free website for screening stocks based on his approach (www.magicformulainvesting.com). In a recent screen I carried out on the site of the top 100 magic formula companies with market capitalizations above Dollars 2bn, the top 10companies ranked by market cap were Exxon Mobil (XOM), Microsoft (MSFT), Pfizer (PFE), Johnson & Johnson (JNJ), IBM (IBM), Intel (INTC), Conoco Phillips (COP), Dell (DELL), 3M (MMM) and Motorola (MOT). Now that's an impressive group of companies.
I own one of them(Microsoft) in my portfolio. Given how sceptical I am about the tech sector, owning this is a real leap for me but this is a fantastic business and the stock is attractively priced. Microsoft has a dominant franchise, some of the most jaw-dropping economic characteristics ever achieved, capable, honest, shareholder-friendly management, and unlike most technology companies, reasonably predictable future prospects.
I am optimistic about Microsoft's future prospects for a number of reasons. The company will be releasing in the next year significant upgrades of its two cash cows, Windows and Office. Historically, these events have been big and highly profitable events for Microsoft.
Yes, Microsoft's days of ultra-high growth are over, inevitable for a company with Dollars 40bn in annual revenues. But it is highly likely the company will grow substantially faster than the S&P 500 for many years to come and that its fabulous economic characteristics will remain largely intact.
At a recent price of Dollars 27, Microsoft, after adjusting for the company's cash hoard, is trading at under 17 times earnings estimates for this calendar year.
I don't claim this is screaming cheap but it is close to the lowest p/e multiple the stock has ever traded at and is, I believe, an attractive price for a company of its quality and bright future.
You might wonder if Mr Greenblatt is concerned that popularising his strategy will mean it will stop working. "Traditional value investing strategies have worked for years and years and everyone's known about them," he says. "They continue to work because it is hard for people to do, for two main reasons. First, the companies that show up on the screens can be scary and not doing so well, so people find them difficult to buy.
Second, there can be one-, two- or three-year periods when a strategy such as this doesn't work. Most people aren't capable of sticking it out through that."—Whitney Tilson is a money manager who co-edits Value Investor Insight and co-founded the Value Investing Congress. "...an entertaining two-hour read" (Daily Telegraph, April 2006)

"...the book unquestionably makes good on its promises." (SmartMoney, March 2006)

Joel Greenblatt's The Little Book That Beats the Market is pitched not to the swells of Wall Street but to the novice individual investor.
Greenblatt, the founder of hedge fund firm Gotham Capital, has taken what he has learned about investing and written this skinny, pocket-size book.
His goal: to explain how to make money in terms that even his five kids could understand. "I figured if I could teach them how to make money for themselves, then I would be giving them a great gift."
Greenblatt, a Columbia Business School professor and an investor for 25 years, says, "I believe I can teach you (and each of my children) to be one of them" — meaning, a successful investor.
The Little Book That Beats the Market is simple and sincere; Andrew Tobias, author of The Only Investment Guide You'll Ever Need, writes the introduction.
The formula works if you have faith and are patient enough to follow his guidance — over time, Greenblatt says.
Greenblatt's formula is based on Warren Buffett's investment principles: Invest in good companies when they are cheap.
According to Greenblatt, his formula historically has beaten the market for nearly two decades. Although he does not name the stocks, he claims that from 1988 through 2004, the high-return/low-price stocks of 30 of the largest 2,500 companies had returns of 22.9% annually.
Simple enough. But how do you find these stocks? "The truth is you don't need an MBA to beat the market," he writes.
But there's no fairy godmother on Wall Street. "If your stockbroker is like the vast majority, he or she has no idea how to help you! They don't get paid to make you money. The plain fact is you are on your own." That said, you have no business investing in individual stocks on your own, he says.
His magic formula promise: "If you just stick to buying good companies (ones that have a high return on capital) and to buying those companies only at bargain prices (at prices that give you a high earnings yield), you can achieve investment returns that beat the pants off even the best investment professionals."
He has a free (for now) website, www.magicformulainvesting.com, which screens companies using his criteria. He advises individual investors to buy a basket of 20 or 30 top stocks over the course of a year and turn them over on a strict schedule, depending on how they perform. He does not mention a minimum amount to invest.
Be forewarned, though. The formula may or may not work over "shorter" periods, which can often mean years, not days or months. Good things come to those who wait and, in this case, Greenblatt means that it takes three, four or even five years to show its stuff. After a year or two of performing worse than the market averages, most people won't stick with it. But you've got to "really believe in it deep down in your bones."
Even if you don't drink the Kool-Aid, you will learn about the technique of value investing from a pro. Greenblatt boils investment jargon down to what you need to know as succinctly and humorously as possible. Along the way — and it won't take you more than two hours tops — you're given a tutorial on bonds, stock shares and prices, earnings yields, return on capital and more. The appendix, which is "not required reading," adds a more detailed, strategic commentary.
It might be hard for less-schooled investors to understand why the "magic" formula makes sense and to stay with it when things get bleak, but the hard part is just getting started, he counsels. That's true for investing, period. (USA Today, January 16, 2006)

“Greenblatt delivers admirably…it contains one of the clearest, most entertaining explanations you’ll ever see of the ideas underlying value investing.” (International Herald Tribune, 16th January 2006)

Hedge fund manager and Columbia University business school professor Joel Greenblatt has written a delightful volume called The Little Book that Beats the Market (Wiley) that anyone who takes his personal investing seriously should read. Greenblatt starts his slim volume with an uncommonly elegant explanation -- written for his children -- of how to value stocks. He argues that any investor can achieve higher-than-average returns by investing solely in companies with a high earnings yield and high return on equity. The book's biggest flaw is Greenblatt's use of cute, over-hyped language. He calls his approach to stock picking a "magic formula" and acts certain his strategy will continue to beat the market even now that everybody knows about it. (The Washington Post, December 25, 2005)

“a marvellously clear explanation of the value investing approach” (Financial Times (also on FinancialNetnews.com) 10th December 2005)

“The book is certainly written simply and the concepts are conveyed compelling” (Daily Telegraph, 29th November 2005)

(Jan.) (Publishers Weekly, November 14, 2006)

"The Little Book is one of the best, clearest guides to value investing out there." (The Wall Street Journal, November 9, 2005)

"...the best book on the subject in years." (Financial Times, May 2006)

"Mr Greenblatt's system is elegant, simple and, on the face of it, very successful." (Investors Chronicle, May 2006)

Excellent! A Must Read for Every Investor
By Value Investor
As a portfolio manager at a large New York based hedge fund I have read more investment books than I care to admit. With that being said, The Little Book That Beat the Market is the first book I have felt compelled to review on Amazon (of course, I am not really going out on a limb recommending a book that legendary investor Michael Price describes as "One of the most important investment books of the last 50 years.")

Professor Greenblatt's first book, You Can Be a Stock Market Genius, is widely regarded as the seminal text on special situations investing and the strategies contained in the book are employed by multiple hedge funds and investment professional. While I recommend Stock Market Genius to anyone who has the time and desire to analyze stocks in detail (at least 3 hours a week) I highly recommend The Little Book That Beat the Market to ALL investors of ALL ages and to ANYONE who wants to understand how businesses create value.

The beauty of the Little Book is a follows:

1) It is simple

2) It works

3) Most investment professionals cannot follow the Little Book's strategy and that makes this strategy one of the only instances where small investors have a HUGE advantage over professionals.

4) The people who have recommended this book are some of the most successful investors in the history of Wall Street (myself excluded, maybe someday!)

1) It is Simple

While some of the reviews on Amazon have argued that the Little Book is too simply, I completely disagree. The reason this book is great is that it takes a very complicated subject matter (investment success) and makes it simple and easy to understand. Bottom line, I don't really care if something is difficult or easy, if I can use it to make money I like it. The fact that the Little Book works AND it is easy, is really the best of both worlds.

2) It Works

The actual results of the Little Book describe in the book are astonishing. While I agree with others that reproducing the exact results of Professor Greenblatt's study is difficult for non-professionals, using Compustats real-time database gets remarkably close to the results described in the book and detailed on his web site.

However, what I find to be more valuable than the results themselves is Professor Greenblatt's explanation on why the formula works. Yes, everyone wants to buy cheap stocks but understanding how to distinguish between which cheap stocks are just cheap and which are good businesses worth owning is critical to investment success. While these concepts might not be entirely new (Warren Buffett writes about them annually), never before have I seen them described so completely and simply in one place.

3) Most Professionals Can't Follow Strategy

Most investors (especially hedge funds) are monitored closely on yearly, quarterly and monthly performance. For a hedge fund, having stable monthly numbers is considered critical to attracting new capital and preventing redemptions. Despite the fact that the Magic Formula has excellent long-term performance (30% annually over 17 years) the monthly volatility (down 5 out of every 12 months on average) makes it impossible for most hedge funds and professional investors to follow strictly without fear of investor redemptions. As a hedge fund manager I plan on incorporating the concepts of the Little Book into my investing but I am establishing a fund for my children that will invest strictly based on Professor Greenblatt's Magic Formula.

4) Recommended by Highly Successful Investors

As I stated above, I am not really putting myself out on a limb recommending a book written by Professor Greenblatt (his 20 year track record of 40% annual returns speaks for itself) and endorsed by Michael Price, Andrew Tobias, Professor Bruce Greenwald, Michael Steinhardt, the Wall Street Journal and the Financial Times.

With that being said, I highly recommend The Little Book that Beat the Market and believe it is a great read for anyone interested in investing and business. FYI, other investing books I highly recommend are The Essays of Warren Buffett: Lessons for Corporate America edited by Lawrence Cunningham; The Intelligent Investor, by Benjamin Graham; Margin of Safety by Seth A. Klarman; Value Investing with the Masters by Kirk Kazanjian and Money Ball by Michael Lewis.

Has Greenblatt discovered a "magic formula"?
By Andrew Szabo
Joel Greenblatt's Little Book That Beats the Market (John Wiley, just released; $19.95), offers what the author says is a "magic formula" for success in the stock market. Such a phrase may arouse your skepticism, as it did mine, but let's look into the claim.

Joel Greenblatt founded and is a managing partner of Gotham Capital, a hedge fund that, according to reports, achieved a 50% annualized return [before payment of an incentive allocation] during the ten years (1985-1995) that it was open to outside investors. This kind of record certainly merits attention. Greenblatt, it's safe to say, has gotten rich.

Greenblatt's formula is based on only two measures: earnings yield and return on capital. These numbers are not hard to obtain. Greenblatt defines earnings yield as EBIT (earnings before interest and taxes) divided by enterprise value. Enterprise value equals a company's stock market capitalization plus debt plus preferred shares minus cash and cash equivalents on the balance sheet. Return on capital he defines as EBIT divided by the sum of net fixed assets (total assets minus depreciation to date) plus net working capital (current assets minus current liabilities).

One weakness of Greenblatt's presentation is the use of earnings as a measure. I prefer to look at a company's free cash flow (after subtraction of capital expenditures) rather than EBIT. Earnings are susceptible to a greater degree of manipulation than cash flow.

Second, the book does little to elucidate the qualitative measures that go into Greenblatt's investment process. Which businesses have a sustainable advantage? How do you identify growth? On the other hand, Greenblatt lays out a testable hypothesis--a real merit.

If you are interested in pursuing Greenblatt's idea's further, I recommend you visit his Website on MagicFormulaInvesting. At that site, you define a minimum capitalization size and a target number of stocks for your portfolio. The magic formula spits out a suggested investment set. A good number of the selections at present are in the areas of pharmaceuticals and technology.

Greenblatt presents some impressive numbers illustrating the back-tested historical results of his approach. These are, as the saying goes, no guarantee of future performance. The more money that follows Greenblatt's approach, the less it will return, over time. However, since Greenblatt's approach has a rational basis, you might also see a more rational allocation of capital to investments, which could reduce their volatility. By the same token, one rarely sees bargains anymore of the sort that Benjamin Graham outlined in Security Analysis (1st ed., 1934)--whereby companies could be bought for less than their net current assets--and the market is better for it. In that sense, financial theory is right in predicating that there is no "money machine" that markets--that is to say, competing investors--will not seek to arbitrage away.

An Easy Quick Read, Some Good Points, Some Big Problems
By Mark Gordon
I won't repeat what other reviewers have said. This book is a quick read, with a breezy tone, and in some simple ways helps to explain value investing, but...

A few problems that the author dismisses without any discussion.

1. Backtesting. Most backtested stock market systems don't work in the forward direction for very long. A good example is the Motley Fool's Foolish Four model, based on the Dow Dividend model. Backtested it looked great! But when a large number of people started to follow the model, it's performance approached mediocre. This makes sense. Wall Street is nothing but efficient. Any strategy that works will quickly be copied by tens of thousands of players, and this can quickly ruin a system. That's why hedge funds that use "black box" models don't publish the models.

And since Greenblatt tells the reader that the system only works over a three year period, it would be at least three years before one could tell the system wasn't working.

I would predict that the system will produce diminishing returns over the next ten years, proportionate to how many copies of the book that the author sells. Ironic that the richer that Greenblatt gets, the poorer his followers will get.

2. Trading costs: Greenblatt completely ignores trading costs and taxes in his analysis. If you follow his advice and buy 30 stocks, you would pay $779 in round-trip commissions at E-trade (or $600 if you had more than $50,000). That's about 1.5% a year in trading costs on $50,000 invested, or about 3% a year on $25,000. Or almost 8% on $10,000! That's a big expense drag, especially if the system doesn't outperform by as much as it claims to.

And taxes. If you do this strategy in a taxable account, you would incur another 15% to 25% hit in the form of capital gains taxes and state taxes, depending where you live. Thus the cost of the strategy could add up to as much as 33% a year in a state like New York or California. Again, very hard to make money this way, unless the strategy beats the market by 100% as it claims. (Of course, in a tax-deferred retirement account, this would not be a problem.)

The alternative, investing and holding a diversified by asset type group of index funds, would have a yearly cost of less than 0.3 % a year, and would generate little or no taxes until sold many years later.

3. Being hostage to his website, which is carefully labeled "free for now." Because his formulas don't translate well to free financial sites, the user of this system will have to depend on the generosity and fairness of the author. What if you start to use them system, and two years from now the site becomes an expensive pay site? That just adds another expense, and each expense becomes a drag on performance.

4. Dubious endorsements. So what if the publishers got rave reviews from famous investors? This doesn't mean that the book has any merit. I'd like to ask each of those investors if they plan on replacing their own investing style with the author's system.

5. No analysis of risk-adjusted returns. A basic principle of investing is that you get paid for risk taken. Thus small stocks, which are riskier, tend to return more over time. Riskless assets such as treasury bill will tend to yield low returns.

I'd like to see risk-adjusted performance data. For instance, what is the Sharpe ratio of the stocks picked by his system? What are the standard deviations? What are the beta's? If the system really is good, then it should look good on a risk-adjusted basis. The interested reader might want to take a look at William Bernstein's excellent The Four Pillars of Investing : Lessons for Building a Winning Portfolio if they want a thorough understanding of risk and return.

I'd also like to see a better attitude from Mr. Greenblatt on his website. Amazon reviewers are a serious, thoughtful group for the most part, and perhaps responding to some of the issues raised in an open way would help readers and potential readers of his book to understand it better.

I guess I'd like to conclude by reminding everyone of the standard investment disclaimer..."Past performance does not guarantee future performance in any way."
